Microsoft and the Mayo Clinic are collaborating to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) model specializing in healthcare, amid a growing trend of people using AI chatbots to ask health-related questions.
Previously, many people searched for medical information on the internet. Now, tens of millions are turning to AI chatbots, which are automated conversational tools that can respond in natural language. However, popular chatbots are often trained from various data sources, including vast amounts of internet content, so their medical answers may be inaccurate or even risky.
The project by Microsoft and Mayo Clinic aims to address this problem by building a custom-trained AI model using medical data, including records, research, and the experience of doctors at Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic is a large American healthcare system known for treating and researching complex medical cases.
Gianrico Farrugia, CEO of Mayo Clinic, said the project needs the right data and the right experts to create better healthcare outcomes for users.

According to the plan, Mayo Clinic will own this AI model. Initially, the technology can be used to assist doctors at Mayo Clinic hospitals, and later it may be licensed to other medical facilities. The two parties also want to develop a medical AI assistant so that patients can ask questions through the hospital's online portal.
This tool can help patients better understand their diagnosis, next steps in treatment, or preventative information. Additionally, the model can improve how Copilot, Microsoft's AI chatbot, answers health-related questions.
However, Microsoft says this process will not happen quickly. Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, anticipates that it will take years for both sides to train and validate the model to be accurate enough before widespread use for high-risk medical questions.
Initially, the model will be provided to experts at the Mayo Clinic for accuracy testing. The Mayo Clinic stated that it has anonymized patient data for AI training and has previously built smaller models to aid in detecting heart disease and diagnosing pancreatic cancer.
