After two consecutive slip-ups, Manchester City entered their match against Brighton at the Etihad Stadium under pressure to secure all three points in order to continue chasing Arsenal in the Premier League title race.
Pep Guardiola's team seemed poised to close the gap on the top of the table, but Chelsea's 90+4th-minute equalizer at the Etihad dealt a major blow to "The Citizens'" ambitions. Not only did it leave Man City six points behind Arsenal, but the result also ended their winning streak at home when leading, something that hadn't happened since March 2025.
Ironically, Man City's aforementioned 13-game winning streak originated from a 2-2 draw against Brighton, the very opponent they will face again this time. Guardiola understands that if they fail to win, Man City risk two consecutive winless home games in the Premier League, an unacceptable scenario at this crucial stage of the season.
Conversely, Brighton received a significant morale boost last weekend with a 2-0 victory over Burnley, ending a six-match winless streak. However, their poor away form remains a major question mark for Fabian Hurzeler's team ahead of their trip to the Etihad.
History is entirely on Man City's side. The Etihad Stadium side have never lost to Brighton in 15 Premier League home matches (12 wins, 3 draws), and this is also the longest unbeaten home record against Brighton in the league. Man City are also particularly formidable in midweek games, with 31 wins in 33 Premier League matches played on Wednesdays.
Notably, only 4 out of their 10 home games this season have seen both teams score, demonstrating their relatively solid control and defense.
Man City entered the match with defensive concerns as Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol were both doubtful due to fitness issues sustained in the draw against Chelsea. However, their attack remained strong thanks to Tijjani Reijnders, who had scored three goals in his last four Premier League games, including two opening goals.
Brighton also lacked their full strength as key striker Yankuba Minteh's participation was uncertain. The visitors' hopes rested on Georginio Rutter, who scored last weekend and has consistently shone in matches where Brighton achieved positive results.
