Chinese President Xi Jinping had a phone call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last month to find a peaceful solution to the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. China then announced that Li Hui, former Chinese Ambassador to Russia for the 2009-2019 term, would lead a delegation to Ukraine.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a regular news conference on Friday that the purpose of Li's trip to Ukraine, Poland, France, Germany and Russia was to "negotiate with all both sides on a political solution to the Ukraine crisis.
Mr. Wang said Mr. Li's visit showed China's "commitment to promoting peace and negotiation". "It completely shows that China is firmly on the side of peace."
"China is willing to continue to play a constructive role in building further international consensus on ceasefire, cessation of war, opening of peace talks and avoiding escalation of the situation," he added. .
Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang, who is also currently on a visit to Norway, said of Mr. Li's visit: "We are all worried about the situation and we are all calling for peace. and a political solution… to the conflict”.
Xi's phone call with Zelenskyy last month, which Ukraine's president described as "meaningful," came after China published in February a 2-point position document on the war in Ukraine, calling for dialogue and respect for the territorial sovereignty of all countries.
