“China and Europe are two influential global powers, two large markets and two great civilizations,” Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang said at a joint press conference with his Norwegian counterpart Anniken Huitfeldt during a visit to Norway on May 12.
“The Cold War was a tragedy for mankind. A new cold war will only bring greater disaster, seriously harm the interests of the people of China and Europe as well as the rest of the world , and undermine multilateralism and global governance,” Mr. Qin Gang stressed.

China and Europe should oppose economic decoupling, Foreign Minister Qin Gang said. “China is Europe’s partner in dealing with risks and challenges. What China exports to Europe and the world is a guarantee of that,” Qin said.
“Both China and Europe… should jointly maintain the right direction of economic globalization, strengthen macroeconomic policy coordination, tap the potential for cooperation, properly address concerns, and jointly maintain stability and ensure the smooth flow of supply chains,” Foreign Minister Qin Gang added.
Mr. Qin also said that China and Europe should “respect and support the development paths of different countries chosen by their people.” “The post-war international order must be protected and genuine multilateralism must be maintained ,” he said.
European Union (EU) officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have emphasized “ risk mitigation” for the world’s second-largest economy, rather than complete decoupling.
On May 9, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also said that the EU must minimize risks in relations with China and not cut ties with the Asian country.
"The EU is aware of this shift and is reacting accordingly. I agree with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that we should not aim for decoupling but rather intelligently mitigate risks," added Olaf Scholz.
