The evening of April 8 marked a proud milestone for the Quang Ninh health sector when the medical team of Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital and the Provincial General Hospital in collaboration with Viet Duc Friendship Hospital simultaneously performed 2 kidney transplants at 2 hospitals. These are the first kidney transplants in Quang Ninh, marking an important step forward for the province's health sector.
Both kidneys were taken from a brain-dead donor at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital and were distributed to two patients in Quang Ninh. One kidney was transplanted to a 41-year-old female patient from Quang Yen Town with end-stage renal failure, undergoing dialysis three times a week, with a kidney transplant scheduled at Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital. The other kidney was transplanted to a 48-year-old male patient from Cam Pha City with end-stage renal failure, undergoing dialysis three times a week, with a kidney transplant scheduled at the Provincial General Hospital.
Doctors perform a kidney transplant on a patient at the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital.
With careful preparation of facilities, equipment, personnel arrangement, detailed planning for each situation, along with high concentration, highly qualified surgical teams, 2 kidney transplants at 2 hospitals were successful. Up to now, both kidney transplant patients are in stable health, the transplanted kidneys excrete urine well, biochemical indicators assessing kidney function gradually reach normal levels, showing a positive response to treatment after surgery.
A week later, the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital continued to perform the second kidney transplant surgery for a patient with end-stage chronic renal failure. Unlike the previous two kidney transplants, the transplanted kidney was taken and transplanted from a living donor. The transplanted pair were siblings. The kidney recipient was a 35-year-old male patient with end-stage renal failure who had been on dialysis for many years.
With careful preparation of facilities, equipment, and medical personnel, the kidney transplant was successfully performed. In particular, the kidney removal was performed using a modern endoscopic method, to help the kidney donor reduce pain, reduce blood loss, and recover quickly. Unlike kidney transplantation from a brain-dead donor, kidney transplantation from a living donor has its own advantages and difficulties, requiring very careful preparation to ensure the best recovery for both the donor and the recipient.
Along with the success in kidney transplant implementation, in recent times, provincial hospitals in Quang Ninh have also successfully implemented many difficult, specialized, and modern techniques in examination and treatment for patients. Typically, the Provincial General Hospital has successfully deployed AI Rapid software in image diagnosis for patients with acute cerebral infarction... This is an artificial intelligence software developed by Stanford University (USA), capable of analyzing brain images from CT or MRI scan results in a very short time, only from 30 seconds to 2 minutes and providing accurate analysis results on the location of the lesion, the volume of the necrotic brain area and the brain area at risk of damage in the following hours. This helps the medical team make treatment decisions much faster and more accurately. The application of Rapid has brought about clear results in emergency care and treatment of cerebral infarction. According to statistics, each year the Provincial General Hospital receives 250-300 cases of stroke, of which the majority of patients arrive at the hospital after the “golden hour: the first 6 hours”. Since applying AI software, the opportunity for active treatment for patients has been significantly expanded.
The implementation of many difficult and specialized techniques has affirmed the professional level of the medical team, doctors, as well as the modern medical equipment of Quang Ninh. The successful implementation of the kidney transplant will be an important premise for the Quang Ninh Health sector to continue researching and implementing more advanced techniques, expanding the scope of implementing other organ transplant techniques such as heart, liver, lung transplants, etc., bringing many treatment opportunities to patients. Thereby, people in the province and the region benefit from specialized medical techniques, improving the quality of medical examination and treatment right at the provincial level, significantly reducing treatment time and costs.
