Self-learning in the digital age

During his lifetime, President Ho Chi Minh frequently reminded teachers and students to be proactive in their studies and to continuously promote the spirit of self-learning.

He launched the Popular Education Movement to eradicate illiteracy among the entire population. From the "Popular Education Movement" to the current "Digital Popular Education Movement," self-learning has become even more essential.

According to President Ho Chi Minh, self-study is not only a method of personal development but also a political and moral responsibility of every revolutionary, of all strata of the people, especially teachers and students. He emphasized that: "If you don't study diligently, you can't progress. Not progressing is regression. The more society progresses, the more work there is, and the more sophisticated the machinery becomes. If we don't study, we will fall behind, and falling behind means being eliminated—we eliminate ourselves."

Society is constantly evolving, and knowledge changes rapidly. Only self-learning and self-research can help people keep pace with the times. When teachers and students maintain a spirit of self-learning together, the teaching-learning relationship becomes a collaborative one in the process of creating knowledge, in line with Ho Chi Minh 's spirit of "learning goes hand in hand with practice, learning throughout life."

President Ho Chi Minh always considered teachers to have a special role in "nurturing people." However, he also emphasized that teachers are only truly worthy when they know how to constantly learn, train, and improve their professional and moral qualifications. Teachers need to be "voluntary and self-aware, viewing learning as a task that revolutionary cadres must complete." Self-study helps teachers maintain their faith, enthusiasm, and creativity – factors that determine the quality of liberal education . President Ho Chi Minh also viewed students not as passive recipients of knowledge, but as active subjects who acquire, create, and apply knowledge to practice. He believed that learning is not just for knowing, but for self-improvement, for serving the people and the Fatherland. Therefore, self-study is the path for learners to develop their inherent abilities, to think independently, autonomously, and creatively.

In today's digital age, every aspect of social life, including education, is changing daily. The enormous volume of new knowledge is rapidly increasing, requiring both teachers and students to proactively engage in self-learning to keep up. Teachers are no longer "know-it-alls," and students are no longer "blank slates" for teachers to answer "a thousand 'why' questions." The ability to self-learn is not only a necessary skill but has become a vital foundation for adapting to the rapid changes in technology, knowledge, and the labor market. Today's technology provides an endless source of knowledge that only those with a self-learning spirit know how to effectively exploit and utilize. If we are complacent with what we already know, not only will learners but also teachers soon become outdated.

The development of science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation is a decisive factor in the development of nations; it is a prerequisite and the best opportunity for Vietnam to develop and prosper in this era of self-improvement. In this context, the advantage will only belong to those who proactively learn, explore, and update their knowledge and use new tools. Personal self-learning needs to be elevated to a new level: not only learning basic knowledge but also learning digital skills, data analysis skills, critical thinking, and information management to become a digital citizen.
