Expedite implementation
In 2026, the UNESCO Global Geopark Dong Van Karst Plateau will enter its fourth reassessment period. From the outset, the province has implemented a comprehensive set of tasks according to the plan, adhering closely to UNESCO's criteria and the recommendations of the Global Geopark Network (GGN). This includes focusing on solutions for conservation, promoting heritage values, developing tourism linked to community livelihoods; and strengthening education and awareness, as well as improving cooperation and management effectiveness.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Giang, Deputy Head of the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark Management Board, shared: “As the focal point for advising, coordinating, and connecting departments, agencies, and localities in implementing tasks for the reassessment, the unit proactively reviews UNESCO's recommendations, monitors implementation progress, provides professional guidance, completes dossiers and documents, and coordinates the development of communication products. In addition, we have established inspection teams to ensure that the criteria are implemented synchronously throughout the Geopark area.”
Currently, many tasks are being implemented according to schedule by the Culture sector and local authorities, such as attending the International Conference on Geoparks in Chile; building reassessment dossiers, completing professional documents, and strengthening connections with expert groups. At the commune level, the Steering Committee for Tourism and Geopark Development has been restructured; the system of experiential sites and routes has been adjusted and upgraded; and environmental beautification and sanitation work has been implemented synchronously at 48 heritage sites and routes included in the assessment roadmap.

Enhancing the value of heritage
These days, preparations for the reassessment are underway in localities within the Geopark area. In Pho Bang commune, which has many heritage sites and lies on the survey route of the UNESCO expert team, the commune has intensified the dissemination of the Regulations on the management, protection, and promotion of the value of the Geopark; and encouraged people to renovate their houses, display the national flag, and maintain the landscape along National Highway 4C and the heritage sites.
Comrade Nguyen Van Hanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Pho Bang commune, said: “Identifying the re-evaluation period as an opportunity to improve the quality of management and promote the local image, the commune has launched a campaign to beautify the landscape and conduct a general environmental sanitation cleanup at the locations where the expert team is expected to survey, such as Tham Ma Pass, the Nine Bends Pass, and the Pho Bang intersection. At the same time, we are strengthening the management of business activities, reviewing OCOP products and characteristic products, ensuring clear price listing and origin, thereby creating the impression of a green, clean, and civilized destination.”
Along with upgrading existing heritage sites, many localities are actively building new experiential destinations, enriching the exploration journey. In Can Ty commune, the viewing area at the Can Ty Ironwood Forest heritage site has been expanded, and restrooms for tourists have just been completed; at the same time, the locality is coordinating with relevant departments to finalize the investment plan at the Can Ty Wall site. Meanwhile, Mau Due commune has completed the exhibition booth showcasing antimony mineral resources; the Sa Ly scenic stop is being built, combining a tea-drinking space and displaying ancient tea products, creating new experiences linked to geological, cultural, and community livelihood values.
In addition to focusing on infrastructure improvement, specialized units have identified ways to enhance the visitor experience by improving the content of explanations for the four experiential routes within the Geopark; and developing content for new heritage sites. Simultaneously, they are redesigning the information signage, directional signs, and QR codes to increase connectivity and spread the value of the Geopark. Many localities are maintaining environmental sanitation campaigns, collecting waste, and beautifying sales points to create a clean and presentable appearance, ready to welcome the expert assessment team.
Implementing these recommendations will not only maintain the status of the Dong Van Karst Plateau as a UNESCO Global Geopark but also contribute to improving tourism infrastructure, enhancing service quality, and preserving geological and cultural values. This also serves as a foundation for the Geopark to continue playing a driving role in green tourism development, preserving identity, and promoting the image of the northernmost region of Vietnam.
