'Elderly people – shining examples'

According to Le Thanh Tan, Head of the An Giang Provincial Association of Elderly People, the "Elderly - Shining Examples" movement has affirmed the important role of local elderly people over the years. Their actions not only serve as shining examples for many people and their families to follow, but also make significant contributions to the community and society, helping to build and sustainably develop their homeland.

Through this movement, many exemplary groups and individuals have emerged in various fields. Notably, elderly people have participated in the "All People Protect National Security" movement, contributing to the development of the grassroots political system, excelling in economic activities and production/business; helping and supporting those in difficult circumstances, and actively building new rural areas and civilized urban areas... These achievements have been recognized with commendations and certificates of merit from the Vietnam Association of Elderly People, the Ministry of Public Security , the Provincial People's Committee, and other relevant agencies.

An Giang province has 272,372 elderly people, with 216,460 members, operating in 1,049 branches and 3,657 groups. Of these, over 7,500 participate in social work, making practical contributions to socio-economic development, new rural construction, ensuring security and order, and national border sovereignty. From 2021 to the present, the elderly associations at all levels have organized many practical activities to care for the material and spiritual lives of their members. Specifically, more than 20,000 elderly people received birthday greetings (1,146 turned 90 years old and 85 turned 100 years old).

In addition, regular health check-ups, provision of health insurance-covered medication, and free eye surgery support have been widely implemented, helping thousands of elderly people improve their health and quality of life. Furthermore, nearly 1,680 members of senior citizen associations at all levels, across 35 clubs and groups, participate in assisting, supporting, and caring for the elderly, their families, and those in difficult circumstances.

At nearly 70 years old, Mr. Nguyen Van Nham has served as the Chairman of the Elderly Association of An Phu commune (Tinh Bien town), setting a shining example for many years in helping, supporting, and caring for the elderly. He achieved outstanding results in the "Elderly - Shining Example" emulation movement during the 2021-2025 period and was awarded a Certificate of Commendation by the Provincial People's Committee. Over the past period, he has strengthened four branches of the association, with nearly 980 elderly members, bringing the association's activities into order.

Besides doing a good job of caring for and protecting the rights of the elderly, he mobilized philanthropists to build new houses for 59 elderly people (50 million VND/house); and mobilized 8,390 gifts (400,000 VND/gift) to support 8,390 elderly people. Notably, two elderly people voluntarily donated their monthly government allowances (a total of 100 million VND) to support and assist those in difficult circumstances. Mr. Nham also mobilized 16 households to voluntarily donate land to expand the road for the construction of new rural areas. Mr. Huynh Van Bung (85 years old) set a good example by leading the way, calling on and mobilizing others to follow suit, with a total area of nearly 5 hectares and a length of about 1 km...

Recognizing the importance of humanitarian social work and support for poor families, especially those suffering from illness or accidents, Mr. Nguyen Van Guong (residing in Phu Hiep hamlet, Cho Vam town, Phu Tan district) contributed 50 million VND and mobilized people to purchase a free ambulance to serve poor patients. In addition, he provides financial assistance to elderly people with illnesses and participates in building "Houses of Compassion"... On average, he mobilizes funds for 30-40 "Houses of Compassion" for the poor each year; and raises money to buy 3 free ambulances to transport patients to higher-level hospitals.

Despite being 92 years old, Mr. Doan Thanh Quang (Binh Thanh Dong commune, Phu Tan district) remains energetic in his charitable and social activities. From 2010 to the present, he has provided two rounds of gifts to 150 poor households, each gift worth 200,000 - 250,000 VND. Over the years, he has contributed to the construction of dozens of bridges in the locality; participated in bridge construction committees; regularly contributed funds to the road repair team in the commune; and contributed to scholarships and talent development programs.

Speaking at the ceremony to receive the Certificate of Commendation from the Provincial People's Committee for outstanding achievements in the "Elderly - Shining Examples" emulation movement, Mr. Doan Thanh Quang shared: "I want to actively promote the socialization of education to raise the intellectual level of the people and train and cultivate human resources and talents for the country. Even at my advanced age, I still have a responsibility to society, especially to care for poor but studious children, helping them to have more motivation to strive for success. In addition, I have contributed money to building bridges and roads, supporting and helping the poor and those in difficult circumstances... To make more contributions to society and the country is my greatest aspiration."

Mr. Doan Tri Hien (Deputy Head of the Representative Board of the Elderly Association of Phu Tan District) said that the district has 22,244 elderly people and 16,710 members. In recent times, the elderly have been very active in implementing the "Elderly - Shining Examples" movement. Through their noble deeds and actions, many exemplary elderly people have emerged, Mr. Doan Thanh Quang and Mr. Nguyen Van Guong being two of them.

With the spirit of "The older the age, the stronger the will," elderly people have been leading the way, setting a shining example in various movements, spreading the spirit of patriotic emulation to every citizen, becoming a bright role model for the younger generation, and contributing to building a more prosperous and beautiful homeland.
