Indonesia's U17 team was given a special exemption to participate in the World Cup.

The FIFA World Council has decided to replace Peru as the host of the 2023 U17 World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to take place in November with the participation of 24 teams. Although the Indonesian U17 team did not qualify for the Asian Championship, they will still participate in the U17 World Cup as the host nation.

"I can only express my gratitude to the FIFA Council for making the decision to choose Indonesia to host this year's U17 World Cup. This is how the world football governing body shows its trust in Indonesian football," said Indonesian Football Federation President Erick Thohir.

Peru was originally slated to host the 2023 U17 World Cup. The South American nation was retained the hosting rights after the 2021 tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indonesia's U17 team qualified for the U17 World Cup as the host nation.

However, Peru was still unable to host the U17 World Cup this time. FIFA assessed that Peru had not completed the necessary infrastructure preparations for the U17 World Cup and decided to revoke the country's hosting rights for the tournament in April 2023.

Indonesia was awarded the right to host the U17 World Cup six months before the opening ceremony. However, the archipelago nation was already well-prepared to host the U20 World Cup and could take advantage of that to organize the tournament at the U17 level.

The world football governing body (FIFA) revoked Indonesia's hosting rights for the 2023 U20 World Cup at the end of March. FIFA's announcement did not mention the reason for Indonesia's loss of the hosting rights. This decision may be related to the FIFA cancellation of the U20 World Cup draw a few days earlier, when the host nation refused entry to representatives of the Israeli U20 team – one of the participating teams. This issue is unlikely to be repeated at the U17 World Cup, as Israel will not have a representative participating.

The problem for Indonesia arose because the Gelora Bung Karno stadium was scheduled to host a music event during the U17 World Cup. The Indonesian Football Federation had to work with the organizers of the Cold Play concert to secure the use of the Bung Karno stadium.
