The head coach of the Romanian national team is in critical condition after suffering a stroke. |
European football is turning its attention to Mircea Lucescu as the veteran strategist is in critical condition following a heart attack.
The 80-year-old coach is currently in a coma, amid reports from Romania indicating a very poor prognosis and that he may only have a few days to live.
Just days before, Lucescu was still the head coach of the Romanian national team. He was forced to leave the position after collapsing during a meeting following a 0-1 defeat to Türkiye in the 2026 World Cup play-off semi-final. Prior to that, he had been receiving treatment for a serious heart rhythm disorder.
According to initial reports from Bucharest University Hospital, Lucescu's condition was initially assessed as "stable." However, his condition subsequently deteriorated rapidly. Despite undergoing heart surgery and having a stent placed to improve blood flow, his health did not improve.
The Lucescu family was immediately by his side. His wife and granddaughter stayed at the hospital. Notably, Razvan Lucescu, his son and the coach of PAOK, left the team just before the derby against Panathinaikos to return to Romania.
Mihai Stoichita, the Technical Director of the Romanian national team, also visited but was unable to speak with Lucescu. He said he could only sit silently beside him, as his colleague was no longer responsive.
Lucescu is one of the most experienced coaches in Europe, having managed many major clubs such as Inter Milan, Galatasaray, and Besiktas. He has had several stints with the Romanian national team and also worked at Dynamo Kyiv.
