UAVs support smart city management.

Since the beginning of June, Hanoi police have been piloting the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) combined with artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor security and public order. This technological solution opens up a new direction for application in smart urban management, improving the efficiency of services for citizens.

Over the years, the development of smart cities in Vietnam has not only focused on data centers or surveillance camera systems, but has also expanded to new technologies capable of flexible observation and real-time data collection. The Hanoi Police's pilot program using UAVs combined with artificial intelligence to monitor security and order is an example of this trend.

According to the plan, authorities will conduct trials in key areas of Hoan Kiem and Tay Ho wards. Images from the UAVs will be transmitted directly via 4G/5G infrastructure to the Command Information Center, serving the purpose of monitoring, directing, and handling situations.

Unlike fixed camera systems, UAVs have the advantage of mobility, the ability to quickly access various areas, and an expanded aerial observation range. This allows authorities to monitor traffic hotspots, urban order issues, or areas with large crowds without deploying excessive personnel on-site.

Notably, UAVs do not operate independently but are integrated with other digital technologies such as AI, GIS digital mapping, and intelligent control centers. This combination allows the system to support early detection of violations such as encroachment on roads and sidewalks, illegal parking, improper waste disposal, or other threats to public order and security.

Upon detecting any unusual activity, UAVs can record images, videos , coordinates, and transmit data in real time to the command center. This rapidly updated information helps authorities develop timely response plans, while also increasing objectivity and transparency in the inspection and handling of violations.

In fact, the application of drones in traffic management is not entirely new. Earlier this year, in April, Hanoi traffic police used drones to monitor and handle cases of illegal parking on Nguyen Trai Street. With many key construction projects underway on this road, resulting in narrowed lanes in several locations, aerial observation significantly aided traffic regulation and ensured smooth traffic flow.

From its initial applications in transportation, UAVs are gradually expanding into urban management and public security. This is a trend adopted by many countries to leverage the advantages of digital technology in modern urban governance.

Furthermore, data collected by UAVs can contribute to the formation of urban databases for long-term management. The images, videos, and location information stored and analyzed will support investigations and tracing when necessary, and help authorities identify shortcomings in infrastructure or traffic organization so that appropriate adjustments can be made.

Another positive point is that the UAVs used in the test were all domestically produced. This allows the operating unit to be more proactive in customizing features according to operational requirements, and also demonstrates the technological capabilities of Vietnamese businesses in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles.

Introducing UAVs into urban management is not just about applying a new technological device. More importantly, it's a step forward in the digital transformation process, connecting data from the field with a centralized operating system, contributing to building a safer, more civilized, and more efficient urban environment for citizens.
