Uganda's Ministry of Health said in a statement on its X account that the six new Ebola cases were people who had been in contact with other confirmed cases. According to the Ministry of Health, two people have been discharged from hospital, 12 are currently hospitalized, and one person has died from Ebola.
"The confirmation of cross-border transmission of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda is a stark reminder that stronger disease surveillance is needed along shared borders," Zoe Brennan, spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), told reporters in Geneva, Switzerland.
Alan Kasujja, a spokesperson for the Ugandan government , said that the government is working to protect its citizens. He added that it is not surprising that some people are trying to cross the official border crossings. "However, communities along the shared border are now more aware of the Ebola situation and they will do everything to protect themselves," said Alan Kasujja.
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on June 2nd that there were 321 confirmed cases of Ebola in the outbreak in Congo and 116 suspected cases.

The Epidemic Preparedness Innovation Coalition has funded three vaccine developers with $60 million to research a vaccine against the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. The Bundibugyo strain is causing outbreaks in several African countries.
This funding is intended to support preclinical development and early-stage clinical trials for three vaccine developers – including Moderna, the University of Oxford, and the Serum Institute of India. The funding will also support manufacturing and conducting later-stage trials if initial data is promising.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the development of this vaccine could help control the current Ebola outbreak, as well as enhance the ability to respond to future outbreaks.
This move comes as health officials are struggling to control an Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain in Central Africa.
