Sarkozy opposed Ukraine and Georgia joining NATO during his presidency (2007-2012), and the Ukraine conflict did not change this view.
The former French president analyzed that Ukraine has every right to self-defense, but defending Kyiv's right to join NATO is a mistake. Currently, Kyiv needs to maintain a neutral position, with security guarantees from the international community, and become a bridge between Russia and Europe.
While acknowledging that current French President Emmanuel Macron was right to try to engage in dialogue with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Sarkozy expressed regret that Macron did not continue this dialogue, as he had done in 2008 – the time of the Georgia crisis.
Ukraine became the sixth country to receive NATO partner status.
In late September 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv was applying for early accession to NATO.
