The U.S. Major, hosted by the United States Golf Association, has just set new records for round times and average strokes, in addition to two hole-ins-ones in the same location on the opening day of its 123rd edition.
This year's US Open is taking place on the par-70 North course at Los Angeles Country Club, with the first round concluding on the morning of June 16th ( Hanoi time) with Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele leading the leaderboard with a score of -8.
Fowler recorded 10 birdies and two bogeys, while his fellow American had eight birdies and the rest were par. With that performance, both are tied for first place, two strokes ahead of the runners-up – Wyndham Clark and Dustin Johnson, who are tied for third.

With their opening round scores of 62, separated by 22 minutes, Fowler and Schauffele jointly set a new record for the best 18-hole time in US Open history. The previous record was 63, set by Johnny Miller in the final round, which secured his victory in the 1963 tournament.
Considering the history of all four majors, Fowler and Schauffele matched the record set by Branden Grace in the third round of The Open 2017.
This year's US Open also saw an opening round average of 71.328 strokes, better than the previous record of 72.29 in 1993. Six players shot 65 or less this morning, the most since the tournament's opening in 1985. And for the first time since its inception, this is the worst opening round performance in the tournament, with amateur players Aaron Wise and Alexander Yang finishing last with 79 strokes.
Besides new records and milestones, the opening day of the 2023 US Open was also made more spectacular by two hole-ins-ones, scored by Matthieu Pavon and Sam Burns, both at the 124-yard par-3 15th hole. This marks the third time the tournament has seen two aces on the same hole in the same round.
Pavon scored in the morning session, teeing off with a gap wedge, a club commonly used around the green:
Pavon hole-in-one on the 15th hole, a par 3.
Burns scored in the afternoon, using a sand wedge specifically designed to escape sand traps.
Burn hole-in-one hole 15 par3.
Burns' hole-in-one helped US Open history reach 50 holes-in-ones. Burns is currently tied for 25th (-1) while Pavon is tied for 56th (+1).
