Peach trees are currently a high-income crop for people in Van Don district, mainly concentrated in Ha Long commune. In the commune, there are over 500 households growing peach trees, of which 60 households cultivate them intensively, with an average of over 300 peach trees per orchard.
The family of Mr. Nguyen Doan Tuan (village 5, Ha Long commune) has been involved in peach tree cultivation for many years. With an orchard of approximately 1.3 hectares and 3,000 peach trees, primarily harvested during the Lunar New Year, Mr. Tuan's family's life has become increasingly stable. Mr. Tuan shared: “During the recent Lunar New Year, I sold over 200 trees, generating about 300 million VND in revenue, mainly from customers and traders who came directly to the orchard. After the New Year, I pruned the branches, replanted trees in place of those sold, and continued to care for and fertilize the trees to ensure healthy growth. Currently, my family is replanning the peach tree planting area, aiming to plant an additional 400-500 trees each year.”
By the end of 2024, the average per capita income of the district reached VND 121.43 million/person/year (VND 116.29 million/person/year in rural areas; VND 140.5 million/person/year in urban areas). The entire district will have no poor or near-poor households according to the multidimensional poverty criteria and the provincial criteria. The percentage of people in the district participating in health insurance reached 97.3%, and 98.2% in rural areas. The percentage of people using centralized clean water reached 81.2% in rural areas and 100% in urban areas.
Van Don district has great potential for developing agriculture linked to tourism due to its rich and diverse agricultural resources, ranging from orchards to aquaculture areas, and many unique OCOP products. Currently, there are several agricultural production models in the area that have developed attractive tourism products, such as: orange cultivation in Van Yen and Ban Sen, peach blossom gardens in Ha Long commune, and seafood farming rafts at sea...
In Van Yen commune, there are over 100 households growing oranges, with a total area of approximately 200 hectares, yielding over 200 tons of oranges annually. With a selling price of 35,000-40,000 VND/kg, each orange-growing household can earn several hundred million VND per year.
Mr. Tran Van Hau, Director of Van Yen Agricultural Cooperative, said: “Orange trees have brought many benefits, becoming a characteristic product of the district and ensuring the livelihoods of the people here. Many households have escaped poverty thanks to orange cultivation and have more stable jobs. Van Yen oranges are becoming increasingly well-known and chosen by many people. Picking ripe, golden oranges yourself, along with food and beverage services, photo opportunities, and eco-tourism right in the orchard, is also a fun and attractive experience for tourists. This model not only boosts consumption but also spreads the Van Yen orange brand.”
With the decisive leadership and guidance of the Party committees and authorities from the district to the grassroots level, and the collective efforts of the people, the New Rural Development program in the district has quickly taken effect. As a result, the people have clearly recognized their role, working together and contributing their labor and resources to jointly build new rural areas, without relying solely on state support. The roads in communes, villages, and hamlets are no longer built solely with state budget funds; they are now also constructed thanks to the people's efforts. The people have spread the movement of donating land for road construction, supervising construction, and enjoying the fruits of their labor, contributing to the journey of building a livable countryside.
