"Green gold" in Bao Nhai

In the context of agriculture seeking sustainable development models that generate high added value, Bao Nhai commune stands out as a bright spot. It boasts thousands of hectares of cinnamon trees, with the most valuable being the decades-old cinnamon trees scattered throughout its villages.

The clearest evidence of the value of decades-old cinnamon trees is the story of Mr. Trieu Kim Vang from Nam Tong village. Mr. Vang recently harvested a cinnamon tree over 40 years old and more than 10 meters tall. Selling just the bark brought his family 16 million VND. If the value of the wood is added, the total income from this ancient cinnamon tree is estimated at around 25 million VND.

"The combination of soil and climate has helped the cinnamon trees here accumulate a significantly higher essential oil content. For example, two cinnamon trees, planted 10 years ago and of the same size, will have bark that weighs more in Bao Nhai because it contains more essential oil than cinnamon from other places. Currently, the selling price of fresh cinnamon bark in Bao Nhai commune ranges from about 60,000 to 80,000 VND/kg."

Besides selling the bark and trunk, cinnamon trees decades old also bring significant income to farmers from selling seeds. On average, 1 kg of dried cinnamon seeds sells for 150,000 - 200,000 VND. Therefore, over the years, the people here have believed that these decades-old cinnamon trees are not only a source of livelihood but also a valuable "savings," an asset passed down through generations.

The economic value of cinnamon trees in Bao Nhai stems from their distinctive quality, which is determined by the unique soil and climate conditions of the area. As a result, Bao Nhai cinnamon is always sought after by the market at high prices, especially for trees aged 30 to 40 years.

The entire Bao Nhai commune currently has 4,325 hectares of cinnamon. Of this, 3,325 hectares are ready for harvesting. Notably, the commune has developed 1,297 hectares of organic cinnamon and has one effectively operating agricultural cooperative.

"Currently, all 38 villages and hamlets in Bao Nhai commune have land for growing cinnamon. Cinnamon is mainly grown on forest land owned by households according to the plan. This ensures both economic development and compliance with regulations on environmental protection and social welfare."

Income from cinnamon in general, and from decades-old cinnamon trees in particular, has brought about a noticeable change in people's lives.

"My family has been growing cinnamon for many years, and we have some trees so big it takes a person to hug them. In years when cinnamon prices are good, my family earns about 100 million VND from selling cinnamon bark and leaves."

The sustainable value of Bao Nhai cinnamon is inseparable from the genetic resource conservation strategy. The Nam Det area not only has the best soil conditions but also preserves ancient cinnamon trees with pure genetic resources. "Currently, in Nam Det village, there are many cinnamon trees that are decades old."

"Every year, households actively care for and harvest cinnamon to use as seeds, preserving valuable genetic resources. The commune also sends agricultural specialists to coordinate with provincial authorities to inspect, review, and evaluate the quality of cinnamon. This activity aims to improve the economic efficiency of cinnamon cultivation while protecting the reputation of the Bao Nhai cinnamon brand," Mr. Tran Manh Cuong added.

Given the great potential of cinnamon trees, Bao Nhai commune has developed a development strategy focusing on sustainability. The first objective is to ensure a stable supply of cinnamon for cooperatives, maintaining the value chain and avoiding oversupply or shortages. This includes planning specific areas and expanding the area of organic cinnamon cultivation under controlled conditions.

Bao Nhai cinnamon, with its distinctive aroma and high economic value, has affirmed its position as "green gold," promising a brighter and more sustainable future. In particular, preserving and developing these decades-old trees today ensures the quality of the Bao Nhai cinnamon brand for future generations.
