Accelerating the certification of organic forests and cinnamon, anticipating a sustainable market.

Yen Bai province is striving to promote forest certification and organic cinnamon certification, viewing this as an important solution for sustainable forestry development, enhancing product value, and increasing income for local people.

Yen Bai actively protects forest resources.

According to the Provincial Forest Protection Department, the total area of forest certified as organic cinnamon in the province has reached 31,661.8 hectares, achieving 79.2% of the planned 40,000 hectares. Of this, the area of organic cinnamon is 19,424.6 hectares (87.9% of the plan), and the area of forest certified as organic is 12,237.2 hectares (68.4% of the plan).

To achieve this result, the Forest Protection Department directed the district-level Forest Protection Units to coordinate with businesses to review areas eligible for participation, while simultaneously promoting and encouraging people to register for forest certification and organic cinnamon certification. Currently, Green Industry Development Joint Stock Company is coordinating with Van Chan district to implement FSC forest certification in 8 communes and villages with forests in the district. Activities include disseminating information to forest owners, distributing application forms, and collecting applications.

It is expected that in the near future, internal processing, information entry, map creation, and the preparation of records and documents will be completed to serve the assessment and certification of forests according to regulations. In addition, Hoa Phat Forestry Investment Co., Ltd. and Mai Lam Forestry Co., Ltd. will continue to maintain the certified forest areas in the province. Alongside forest certification, Yen Bai is also actively implementing the policy of payment for forest environmental services (FES).

In May 2025, the Provincial Forest Protection and Development Fund received and collected VND 19,360.22 million in forest environmental service fees. To date, the cumulative total received and collected is VND 33,607.82 million. This work is carried out regularly, ensuring close coordination to determine the area for service provision and to provide timely payment support to service providers.

Despite achieving positive results, forest certification still faces some limitations. Some participating businesses have not proactively allocated sufficient financial and human resources, leading to slow implementation progress. To overcome this situation, the Forest Protection Department will continue to urge localities and units to accelerate progress and promptly report any obstacles so that solutions can be proposed.

Promoting forest certification and organic cinnamon certification is the right direction, contributing to bringing Yen Bai's forest products to the international market, creating more value and sustainability for the local forestry industry.
