Aspiration in the land of mist

Y Tý is the most remote commune in Bát Xát district. After the merger of Lào Cai and Yên Bái provinces, it is also one of the most remote areas of the newly formed Lào Cai province. Yet, with life undergoing dramatic changes, aspirations for development continue to grow from this border region.

The fertile land and cool climate have attracted businesses from the lowland provinces to choose Y Tý as a destination for production development. A decade ago, Phìn Hồ village in Y Tý commune was still a desolate, deserted area shrouded in fog. Today, Phìn Hồ has become a thriving vegetable and lily growing area with approximately 30 hectares. Lilies are finicky plants and very sensitive to weather, but when they take root in this misty land, they grow and develop well, producing beautiful and uniform flowers. Looking at the rows of lilies, ready for harvest and reaching towards the sun and wind, Mr. Lỗ Văn Tứ, from Mê Linh flower village in Hanoi , couldn't hide his joy.
Mr. Tu said: "My family has invested in growing lilies in Y Ty for 4 years. Currently, to harvest 20 hectares of lilies, we hire about 70-80 local laborers each day. After cutting the lilies, they are transported to a collection point to be bundled into bunches. The work requires skill but is not too strenuous, so the local people can handle it."
Ms. Hau Thi Mai, from Phin Chai 1 village, Y Ty commune, has only been working at Mr. Tu's family lily farm for a little over a week, but she has already adapted to the job. Ms. Mai shared: "The work isn't hard, and it provides extra income, so I'm very happy."
Sharing with us, the Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Y Tý commune, Phu Mò Giờ, said: "In recent years, the model of agricultural development linked with tourism has developed relatively strongly in the area, creating new tourism products for the locality. The entire commune has about 50 households in the villages of Phìn Hồ, Trung Chải, and Mò Phú Chải who rent land to businesses and individuals to grow lilies. Thanks to this, they have additional income to develop their family economy ; at the same time, the people have also gained access to new methods in agricultural production to apply to their family economic development. I believe that these new production models will realize the dreams and aspirations of the people here, so that their lives will be more prosperous."
A new planting season begins, the flowering seasons follow one another in vibrant splendor, and so the land and people of Y Tý continue to burn with dreams and aspirations for a bright future for this border region.
Furthermore, tourism remains a key attraction for the Y Tý highlands. The pristine natural landscapes, along with the unique culture of the Hà Nhì, Dao, Giáy, and Mông ethnic groups, have become highlights of this border region of Vietnam. Recognizing the tourism potential of this area, many young people have recently left the city to open homestays and provide accommodation services in the mountains.
Mr. Lam Minh Tu, a resident of Lao Cai city, is one such person. While running a tour business, Mr. Tu and his wife also run a small shop near Y Ty market, selling souvenirs and local specialties. Mr. Tu believes that infrastructure development will create favorable conditions to attract more tourists to Y Ty in the future. "Many of my customers, upon learning that the road to Y Ty is nearing completion, have booked trips to see the golden rice fields," Mr. Tu said excitedly.
Along with nearly 20 homestays, the landscape of the border region of Y Tý today is further enhanced with impressive colors, highlighted by the Cloud Paradise Resort Y Tý, located in Mò Phú Chải village, spanning 16 hectares. This resort impresses with its stone-paved paths, rustic stone fences, and spaces overflowing with climbing roses, hydrangeas, and apricot blossoms.
According to Mr. Ngo Dinh Hiep, the resort manager, Cloud Paradise Resort Y Ty has completed 27 villas, equivalent to 37 rooms, with a capacity to accommodate over 100 guests. Once operational, the resort will also collaborate with local households to develop adventure and experiential tourism, generating income for the local community.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tai, Secretary of the Party Committee of Y Ty commune, said: "After a term of overcoming difficulties, the Y Ty highland area has reduced the number of poor households by nearly 10%; many agricultural and tourism projects have been invested in. The biggest difficulty is transportation infrastructure, but this issue is also being resolved. Currently, the Ban Vuoc - Ban Xeo road has been completed; the project to renovate and upgrade the Ban Xeo - Den Sang - Y Ty road is being accelerated. When completed, these projects will solve the bottleneck in transportation infrastructure, opening up opportunities for the development of tourism in Y Ty, as well as realizing the goal of making Y Ty a tourist town. Building on the achievements, the Party Committee and people of Y Ty will continue to unite to further develop the locality in the new term."
