A Luoi, a dreamy place amidst the vast mountains.

Most tourists visiting Hue are captivated by the Perfume River, Ngu Mountain, the tombs, temples, and palaces… but few know that there is also a highland region called A Luoi with a majestic, dreamy, and magnificent landscape of vast forests.

A Lưới is a mountainous district in Thừa Thiên Huế province, bordered to the west by Laos. With its clean and cool climate at an average altitude of 600-800 meters above sea level, A Lưới is home to many ethnic minority groups such as the Ta Oi, Co Tu, and Van Kieu.

The road is beautiful.

To reach A Lưới, visitors must conquer a 70km stretch of road connecting from Hue city. This is Highway 49, with quite picturesque scenery. Visitors can stop along the way to admire the stunning Hue landscape and take "like-worthy" photos that will attract the attention of their friends.

First is the legendary A Co Pass. This is the first challenge for drivers. On one side of A Co Pass is a sheer cliff, and on the other is a deep, desolate ravine, with dense, intertwined forests. The road through the pass is treacherous, but visitors will be rewarded with the captivating and colorful scenery of A Co under the morning sun.

After crossing the A Co pass, visitors will be able to admire a bridge with a rather unique name - the Crow's Beak Bridge. This is the second stop that anyone visiting A Luoi should not miss. Firstly, its height will truly overwhelm visitors. Young people often try throwing a stone into the small stream nearby and listening to the echo to fully appreciate the length of the deep gorge below the bridge. This is always a "prime" spot for tourists to capture "once-in-a-lifetime" photos with the mountains and forests of A Luoi in Hue.

In addition, along the road leading to A Luoi district, looking on both sides, tourists can enjoy the beautiful natural scenery with many clumps of bamboo and rattan growing close together, which is very rustic, familiar, and also very poetic.

One could say that the journey to the mountains, silver waterfalls, and streams of A Lưới is a breathtaking panorama of lush green forests, golden honey-like sunlight, and grayish-blue clouds…

A destination that leaves a lasting impression.

Besides the stunning natural scenery along the way, when exploring the A Lưới highlands, visitors cannot miss the streams and waterfalls, beautiful gifts that nature has bestowed upon this place.

A Nor Waterfall is located 3km northeast of the center of A Luoi district. It boasts stunning scenery with three interconnected waterfalls, 8m, 60m, and 120m high. Around the waterfalls, clusters of wildflowers bloom, their colors and fragrances interspersed with moss-covered rocks. If you visit early in the morning, it will be difficult to distinguish the waterfalls from the trees and hills, as everything is shrouded in a hazy white mist.

A Lin is a stream located 10km from A Luoi town in Hong Trung commune. It's only 500m northeast of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The area boasts many picturesque bathing spots with clear blue water and pristine beauty nestled amidst the vast mountain and forest landscape. Visitors can also enjoy services such as renting inflatable floats and seating areas. For those who enjoy adventure, there's the option of traveling another 800m to Ar Lang Waterfall – a place with many stunning natural attractions…

Par Le Stream is also a favorite spot for tourists because it has two large swimming areas: Cat Toom Bay and Am Bat Bay. The swimming areas here are both beautiful and spacious, covering over 100 square meters, allowing visitors to comfortably frolic in the cool water. In addition, the stream is surrounded by a pristine forest, creating a stunning landscape.

A Lưới also boasts ancient forests containing biodiversity and the beauty of the mountainous region, evoking the wild and majestic vitality of the mountains and forests. Most famous is the forest in A Roàng commune, located just 30 km from A Lưới town and stretching from A Lưới to Giàng district in Quảng Nam province. This is a pristine old-growth forest comprising many relatively intact forest ranges, covering an area of up to 3,000 hectares and home to many rare plant and animal species.

Things to note when exploring the A Lưới highlands.

A Lưới enjoys a cool climate year-round and fresh air thanks to its location surrounded by the Truong Son mountain range, making it a suitable destination for visitors at any time of the year.

Located just about 70km east of Hue city center, A Luoi now offers many travel options for tourists. Among them, the two most suitable options are motorbikes and cars.

Specifically, if you are young, passionate about exploration, and not afraid of challenges, choosing to travel by motorbike is a perfect suggestion. Along the way to A Lưới, tourists will be able to fully admire the beauty and scenery of the mountains and forests. However, this route will involve going uphill and downhill sections that are quite treacherous, so it requires experienced motorbike riders.

Tourists can also choose to travel by coach or bus from the Southern Bus Station in Hue City, with prices starting from 150,000 VND per person per trip.

Thanks to the recent focus on developing community-based tourism, A Lưới now has many basic accommodation facilities that meet the needs of tourists.

Preliminary statistics show that there are nearly 30 homestay accommodations with diverse architectural styles and sizes currently operating, with rental prices starting from around 400,000 VND/room/night, depending on demand. However, to ensure satisfaction and a good night's sleep, tourists should carefully research and book in advance to avoid peak seasons and weekends when rooms may be unavailable.
