Album "Vietnamese Soul".
Composer Hoài An spoke about the beauty of the "Vietnamese Soul" in his newly released album of the same name. And all of that is encapsulated in 15 songs imbued with the "Vietnamese soul."
Composer Hoài An divided the 15 songs into three themes. The group focusing on national heroes includes "The Merits of King Hùng," "The Drum of Mê Linh," "The Reed Flag," "Saint Trần," "Famous Generals of the Lý Dynasty," and "The Emperor in Cloth Robe." The group focusing on legends and fairy tales includes "The Legend of Cổ Loa," "Bánh Chưng and Bánh Giầy," "The Fairy Tale of Thạch Sanh," "Sơn Tinh and Thủy Tinh," and "Trương Chi and Mỵ Nương." The remaining four songs are about historical events in Vietnam, such as "The Heroic Spirit of Thăng Long," "The Spirit of Đông A," "Bạch Đằng Giang," and "The Vietnamese Language." Hoài An performs these songs with a heroic and emotional style, evoking a sense of pride in the listeners.
Composer Hoài An said that he has loved Vietnamese history since childhood, with his first teacher being his father, teacher Võ Đại Mau, who told him about the history, fairy tales, and legends of the country. As he grew up, he read books and listened to historical songs by composers such as Lê Thương and Phan Huỳnh Điểu, and began composing songs on this theme. Among his approximately 800 published songs, many songs on Vietnamese history have left a lasting impression on music lovers.
Of the 15 songs in this album, "Legend of Co Loa" was the first one he composed, nearly 25 years ago. He recounts that it was when he saw his father reading a copy of historian Tran Trong Kim's "A Brief History of Vietnam," with important details underlined. He read it and was inspired to write this song. His most recent song is "The Emperor in Cloth Robes," composed in 2023, with a powerful melody and lyrics about King Quang Trung.
Composer Hoài An called the album "Vietnamese Soul" "the musical masterpiece of his life." Indeed, the album is meticulously and artistically produced. Many singers contributed their voices, including famous vocalists like Võ Hạ Trâm, Đoàn Đại Hòa, Dương Ngọc Hà, the Cadillac backing vocal group, and the Ngày Mới choir… Many songs are performed as trios or group songs, with the song "Tiếng Việt" featuring 45 artists singing together, creating a spectacular effect. The music in the album is also heavily invested in, with instrumentalists such as Hải Phượng (zither), Thu Thủy (two-stringed fiddle), Hoài An (guitar, pipa, mouth harp), Đạt Kìm (zither), and Minh Phát (lute)… The arrangement and orchestration for the album were handled by three talented composers: Lý Huỳnh Long, Đạt Kìm, and Minh Đăng, giving the album a fresh and captivating musical style.
In addition to releasing the CD format, composer Hoài An also provides a QR code for music lovers to download the original file and plans to release "Hồn Việt" online in the form of karaoke, lyric clips, or a music video to spread the song. After 20 years, "Hồn Việt," steeped in the beauty of Vietnamese history, brings forth proud and meaningful melodies from composer Hoài An!
