Regarding the Dien pomelo export region

From the first pomelo trees planted in 1996, Yen Tri commune has now become one of the "capitals" of Dien pomelo in the North. Not only does it have a large yield, but Yen Thuy Dien pomelo is also a 4-star OCOP product at the provincial level, meeting Global GAP standards, making it eligible for export to demanding markets such as the UK, EU, and the US.

In mid-October, the pomelo harvest season begins in Yen Tri region. In many orchards, early-ripening pomelos have been harvested and sold to traders at an average price of about 14,000 VND per fruit, bringing in a significant income at the beginning of the season.

Regarding the Dien pomelo export region

Mr. Vu Xuan Oanh, Director of Dai Dong Agricultural Cooperative, inspects the technical processes to ensure the quality of pomelos before export.

Although Dien pomelos ripen later, around mid-November, the atmosphere in the Dien pomelo orchards has been bustling since the end of October. Farmers are focusing their efforts on the final technical stages, preparing for the first shipments to be exported in the 2025 pomelo season. Mr. Vu Xuan Oanh, Director of Dai Dong Agricultural Cooperative in Yen Tri, said: This year, the cooperative expects to export about 100 tons of Dien pomelos to two traditional markets, the EU and the US; and may expand to the South Korean market. In about a month, when the Dien pomelos begin to ripen fully, the cooperative will prepare for export shipments, but even now, we pomelo growers must stay in the orchards, closely monitoring each tree. After the recent storms, care, quality assurance, and fruit appearance must be even more emphasized.

Regarding the Dien pomelo export region

Dien pomelo products are processed and labeled with traceability tags according to standards before being exported.

This is the fourth year that Dai Dong Agricultural Cooperative has exported pomelos to international markets. Although the export volume is not yet large, the fact that for three consecutive years, the export shipments have been accepted in demanding markets is of particular importance. It not only affirms the brand of Dien Yen Thuy pomelos but also contributes to stimulating domestic consumption, stabilizing prices, and increasing the economic value of pomelo cultivation. Successful exports also help change the production mindset of pomelo growers towards a more professional and systematic approach, focusing on quality, safety standards, and traceability.

It is known that the Dien pomelo tree first took root in Dai Dong village, Yen Tri district, nearly 30 years ago. At that time, Dai Dong village was mainly inhabited by people from the lowlands who came to clear land and settle. With their diligent and hardworking nature, the people here tried planting many types of crops hoping to find a variety suitable for the soil and climate. In 1996, the first Dien pomelo trees were brought from Hanoi to be planted experimentally. Unexpectedly, this specialty crop of Dien land thrived and developed strongly in Dai Dong. Thanks to the suitable soil, climate, and proper care, the Dien pomelo quickly established its brand. The fruit has a golden yellow color, juicy segments, a sweet and refreshing taste, and a distinctive aroma, making it popular with consumers. At one point, the price of each pomelo reached 34,000 VND, a very high price compared to the general price at that time, helping many households achieve stable income and become well-off.

From the initial pioneering households, the area planted with Dien pomelos has rapidly expanded. The entire Yen Tri commune now has nearly 500 hectares of Dien pomelos, including red and green varieties. Among them, the Dai Dong Agricultural Cooperative has 30 core members with a production area of 30 hectares, producing pomelos according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, with an average output of 750 tons per year. Currently, the entire pomelo growing area in the commune has been granted planting area codes, opening up significant export opportunities.

Among the households that have become wealthy from growing Dien pomelos, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue is a prime example. Recognizing that the soil in Dai Dong is suitable for Dien pomelo trees, in 2016, her family boldly invested in 7 hectares to plant Dien pomelos and green-skinned pomelos. Three years later, the orchard yielded its first harvest. Ms. Hue said: "We apply safe production processes according to VietGAP standards, use organic fertilizers, and invest in an automatic drip irrigation system and proper pruning. As a result, the trees are healthy, the fruits are uniform, and the pomelo segments are crispy and intensely sweet. Currently, the selling price of pomelos is stable, ranging from 12,000 to 15,000 VND per fruit, bringing the family an annual revenue of over 1 billion VND."

By applying science and technology and avoiding pesticides and chemical fertilizers, many households in the Dai Dong Agricultural Cooperative have shifted to organic farming, producing along a sustainable value chain. As a result, average income reaches 300-400 million VND/hectare/year, and the cooperative's total annual revenue averages over 7 billion VND. Dien pomelo is also one of the exemplary agricultural production models and has become a key crop bringing high economic efficiency to Yen Tri.

Mr. Vu Xuan Oanh, Director of Dai Dong Agricultural Cooperative, said: "To maintain the brand and improve product quality, cooperative members are committed to producing according to strict quality control procedures. All households keep daily production logs, use organic fertilizers, and bag the fruit to prevent blemishes, ensuring both appearance and quality. In particular, all households now apply modern irrigation technology to care for the plants and periodically test sugar levels to ensure they meet standards before harvesting."

It is evident that, from its initial experimental steps, Yen Thuy Dien pomelo has gradually established its position in both domestic and international markets. Each harvest season not only provides a stable income for the people of Yen Tri but also serves as proof of the correct direction in restructuring crop patterns, applying science and technology, and producing safe agricultural products. With this foundation, Yen Thuy Dien pomelo is continuing to expand its export market, becoming a key agricultural product and contributing to the sustainable economic development of Yen Tri commune.
