On July 1st, the Vietnam Association of Farm and Agricultural Enterprises (VFAEA) sent a document to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine and the Legal Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) providing feedback on the Animal Protection Index (API), to support the research and improvement of animal welfare policies in Vietnam.
According to VFAEA, over the years the Association has collaborated with domestic and international organizations to implement numerous programs related to animal welfare and responsible livestock farming.
Through its collaboration with the World Animal Protection (WAP), the Association recognizes that the Animal Protection Index (API) and related assessment tools are being used by many ASEAN countries as a reference point in policy making, improving animal welfare practices, and meeting market demands.

However, the Association stated that the API index currently only includes data up to 2020. Therefore, VFAEA requests that relevant agencies research, review, and provide feedback on the API as well as related animal welfare indicators. This will be an important reference for assessing the suitability of the index in the Vietnamese context, contributing to guiding research, improving policies, and promoting harmonization with international standards.
In addition, the Association also recommends that the content on "animal welfare" be further adjusted and supplemented during the drafting of the Law and related documents, in order to create a legal framework suitable for the requirements of sustainable livestock development and international integration.
VFAEA expresses its desire to continue receiving attention, cooperation, and professional exchange from regulatory agencies to jointly promote research and policy development on animal welfare in the future.
