Smartphones are becoming increasingly durable, leading many to believe that screen protectors are unnecessary. However, even though newer devices are more impact-resistant, they can still be damaged. The durability of a smartphone screen depends on the materials it's made from; for example, Sapphire Glass is known for its scratch resistance but is more fragile than Gorilla Glass.

Both Gorilla Glass and Ceramic Shield help smartphone users feel more secure when using their devices.

Currently, Gorilla Glass and Ceramic Shield are the two leading types of protective glass used by Samsung and Apple. Both are manufactured by Corning and are considered effective solutions, making a comparison of their durability difficult. Corning has yet to release any direct comparisons between the two products, seemingly unwilling to create controversy about its products.
However, according to independent testing by the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, Gorilla Glass is slightly more scratch-resistant than Ceramic Shield. Specifically, although the iPhone 17 Pro with Ceramic Shield 2 showed impressive durability, it still showed scratches at level 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, equivalent to the old Gorilla Glass Victus. Conversely, Gorilla Armor on the Galaxy S24 Ultra was scratch-resistant up to level 7, and could even withstand deeper scratches at level 8.
Introduced by Apple starting with the iPhone 12, Ceramic Shield is said to be twice as durable as other protective glass types thanks to ceramic nanocrystals embedded in the glass. Ceramic Shield promises to prevent cracking and enhance structural integrity, but its scratch resistance remains comparable to older versions of Gorilla Glass.

Consumers themselves acknowledge that, although Ceramic Shield 2 is durable, avoiding scratches is almost impossible; therefore, using a screen protector remains a necessary option to keep the screen looking new.
As for Gorilla Glass, this type of glass has undergone many improvements since the early days of smartphones. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 technology can withstand impacts from heights up to 2 meters, while its scratch resistance is comparable to Ceramic Shield.
In particular, the new generation Gorilla Armor uses ceramic materials to enhance durability. The Gorilla Armor 2 version, featured on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, performs even better, capable of withstanding impacts from a height of 2.2 meters, marking a significant improvement over previous versions.
Overall, both Ceramic Shield and Gorilla Glass have their own advantages, but Gorilla Glass currently has a slight edge in scratch resistance. Even so, smartphone users are still advised to use screen protectors to protect against potential scratches.
