This Lunar New Year, on familiar streets in Ho Chi Minh City such as Pham Ngoc Thach, Nguyen Hue, or the area around the City Post Office , it's not difficult to spot young people enthusiastically writing couplets, conveying good wishes through each word.
Previously, when people mentioned "calligrapher," they often pictured an old man with a long white beard, wearing a traditional silk robe and headscarf, sitting at a writing desk with ink and red paper. Now, however, many young people have taken on this role with a very different style. Although their methods have changed, what they all share is a great passion for calligraphy.

For young calligrapher Vo Tuan Xuan Thanh (born in 1999), calligraphy is not just an art form but also a means of expressing emotions, life philosophies, and beauty in each stroke. Beyond his passion, calligraphy has become his main source of income, allowing him to dedicate himself to and develop this profession with greater focus.
Sharing his journey in pursuing calligraphy, Thanh said that social media has become a powerful tool in spreading this art form closer to young people. He regularly posts calligraphic paintings and couplets on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, attracting the attention of many calligraphy enthusiasts. Thanks to this, calligraphy is no longer confined to traditional spaces but has entered the modern world , becoming an integral part of the spiritual life of today's youth.
However, the path to pursuing calligraphy is not always easy. To be able to write graceful, soulful strokes, the writer needs patience, meticulousness, and long periods of practice. Brushes, ink, and handmade paper are not easy tools to use, and to create a beautiful work, the writer must pour all their heart, skill, and concentration into it.
Today, many young people have taken on the role of "calligrapher" with a fresh new style.
Furthermore, technological advancements also present many challenges for calligraphers. Today, with just a few clicks on a computer, one can create calligraphic artwork quickly and sharply. However, for young calligraphers like Thanh, this only makes them appreciate and be more careful with each stroke. Because, no matter how modern the technology becomes, handwritten characters still hold a special spiritual value, containing the soul of the writer and the subtlety of traditional art.
Despite facing many challenges, young calligraphers in Ho Chi Minh City continue to innovate and develop. They not only carry on the tradition but also breathe new life into the art of calligraphy, making it more accessible to modern life.
The red couplets on large paintings, the delicate calligraphy on small, charming New Year's greeting cards, or the calligraphy tutorial videos on social media… all are testaments to the creativity and dedication of the younger generation to traditional art. It is the soul and cultural pride embedded in every stroke of ink, creating a Tet (Vietnamese New Year) rich in Vietnamese identity.
