Writing in the middle of exam season

Even though this is his final year of high school, Tran Thach Khang, a student in class 12A8 at Nguyen Van Thoai High School in Thoai Son commune, continues to diligently nurture his passion for literature.

At the age of 18, Khang made his mark with encouraging achievements, opening up a promising path in his pursuit of education.

My passion blossomed from a love of reading.

Meeting Khang at the awards ceremony for the short story writing contest "The Breath of the Alluvial Plain," organized by the An Giang Young Writers' Club, what caught my attention was that he was still in 12th grade but had won first prize with his work "The Layers of Stone of Time." Reading this work, many found it hard to believe the author was a 12th-grade student. In every page, Khang demonstrates a captivating storytelling style, a rich vocabulary, and keen observations of life, creating a work full of emotion. "I was surprised to learn I won first prize. When I submitted my entry, I simply thought of trying my hand at it and sharing my story. This result makes me happy and proud, and gives me more motivation to read more, write more, and continue pursuing my passion for writing," Khang confided.

Sharing about his love of literature, Khang said that his passion for writing began with his early love of reading. While his peers spent their time on other activities, Khang loved reading from his elementary school years. Thanks to his extensive reading, Khang nurtured the dream of being able to tell stories through words, just like the authors he admired. He practiced writing, recording his own ideas, and gradually cultivated his passion.

For Khang, writing isn't a burden, but an effective way to relieve stress after school. During his free time or on weekends, he often "escapes" to the library or a familiar corner of a cafe to read and write. In the quiet space, Khang immerses himself in the world of stories, recording his thoughts and feelings through each page.

Balancing studies and hobbies

Besides trying his hand at prose, Khang also writes poetry. His works often choose themes close to life and his hometown. Many poems and stories mention familiar places such as Mount Sap, Ong Thoai Lake, and the Oc Eo - Ba The historical site. In addition, Khang writes about family feelings, friendship, and school life, expressing deep affection for his homeland and genuine emotions about the life around him.

Besides winning first prize in the short story writing contest "The Breath of the Alluvial Plain," Khang also won second prize in the school-level poetry writing contest "I Love Literature." Many of his works have been published in newspapers and magazines such as Van Nghe Quan Doi (Military Arts and Literature), Chieu Anh Cac (Chieu Anh Cac), Van Nghe TP. Ho Chi Minh (Ho Chi Minh City Arts and Literature), and Dat Mui Newspaper.

Despite being close to his 2026 high school graduation exams, Khang still dedicates time to writing, taking advantage of every opportunity to read more books and write whenever new ideas come to mind. Khang says that maintaining this writing habit helps him balance his studies and personal interests, while also nurturing his dream of pursuing a literary career in the future. In Khang's room, a small corner is dedicated to displaying books, publications, awards, and notebooks filled with ideas. For Khang, that space is both a learning environment and a creative world, where his writings and emotions are preserved.

Khang believes that writing is not just a hobby but also a tool for understanding the world around him, empathizing, and recognizing positive values. He wants his stories to reflect keen observation and genuine emotion in the simple things around his school life and hometown. “I hope to write based on what I truly feel and experience from life. I want to tell stories about the kindness and beauty that still exist around me,” Khang said.
