Vietnam - A Journey of Memories

Dominique's photographs are not staged or embellished. She doesn't take them to tell a story, but to preserve a Vietnam that is intimate, quiet, kind, and resilient.

The newly published bilingual book "Vietnam - A Journey of Memories" (Vietnam - Un voyage mémiiel), co-authored by Dr. Hoang Thi Hong Ha, an ethnologist, and French artist Dominique de Miscault, aims to promote cultural exchange and spread the value of historical memory among French and Vietnamese readers.

Every time I come to Vietnam, I feel like I'm returning home.

This book is the result of over 30 years of experience and reflection on Vietnam through the lens and perception of a Western artist, combined with commentary and cultural research from a Vietnamese perspective.

"I wasn't born in Vietnam. But every time I come here, I feel like I'm coming home." This is the opening sentence of a book by French photographer Dominique de Miscault, who has spent more than three decades in Vietnam, quietly documenting the everyday beauty of a country transforming after war and years of being besieged by the US embargo.

When Dominique first arrived in Hanoi in 1992, he didn't bring with him any big projects or specific plans, just a clear feeling: Vietnam was waiting for him.

Through her lens, Vietnam doesn't appear as a tourist destination or a magnificent land, but rather as a space of memory: simple, quiet, and profound.

Vietnam - A journey of memories that doesn't follow a plot or chronological order; each photograph is a slice of memory, a piece of emotion about streets, faces, postures, hands, light... seemingly ordinary but carrying within them a part of Vietnam's soul.

Dominique's photographs are not staged or embellished. She doesn't take them to tell a story, but to preserve a Vietnam that is intimate, quiet, kind, and resilient.

The book's highlight is the synergy between images and words. Dr. Hoang Thi Hong Ha, a Vietnamese cultural researcher living in France, compiled the commentary in Vietnamese. The commentary doesn't explain or interpret, but resonates with the images, as if fragments of memories are whispering in the Vietnamese language itself.

The authors will hold two book launch events: on August 12th in Paris, at the Parfums du Vietnam headquarters - 68 avenue d'Italie, Paris 13, and on August 19th in Hanoi, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd.
