According to information from the Hanoi Cheo Theatre on July 15th, the theatre recently premiered the classic Cheo play "Luu Binh - Duong Le," a meticulously and passionately restored version by People's Artist Tran Quoc Chiem. The performance, which premiered on the evening of July 13th, attracted a large audience of all ages, including foreign visitors.

The artists and actors of the Hanoi Cheo Theatre have embodied their characters, portraying their personalities at different points in time, creating plot twists, resolutions, situations, and climaxes that are extremely impressive.

The skillful hands of the stagehands, combined with the extensive stage experience of the talented artists, contributed to the show's appeal. As a result, the Dai Nam Theater was packed, and the audience continuously applauded.

The classic chèo play "Lưu Bình - Dương Lễ" is one of the seven famous chèo plays in Vietnamese traditional opera. It is also considered one of the best classic chèo plays, possessing enduring value regardless of the era. Therefore, numerous versions of "Lưu Bình - Dương Lễ" exist, and reviving it remains a significant challenge.

However, the Hanoi Cheo Theatre has successfully revived "Luu Binh - Duong Le" with a team of young artists, new faces, and actors in their early twenties, full of talent and passion for their work.

That was Quang Truong playing Luu Binh – the most challenging role in the play, as he appears almost from beginning to end, is the main character with many songs, recitations, and various emotional states. With this role, Quang Truong was praised for his excellent portrayal of the character through his natural acting style, handsome appearance, and sweet singing voice.

Young actor Tien Dat, playing the role of Duong Le, also created many surprises. Previously, Tien Dat usually played humorous and witty roles, so when he transformed into the role of a newly-passed "civil official," he was very convincing and created enjoyment for the audience present.

His deep, warm voice, dignified demeanor, confident and measured speaking style, and proactive, self-assured acting made Tiến Đạt's role, despite his limited screen time, leave a strong impression on viewers.

Another character who appears throughout the play – Chau Long, played by young artist Dieu Linh – has garnered much affection from the audience. Almost her first time being given a leading role, and a "model role" in traditional Vietnamese opera, Dieu Linh felt quite a bit of pressure.

However, with her beautiful face, charming acting style, and sweet voice, Dieu Linh embodied the role of Chau Long quite convincingly.

To achieve those successes, in addition to their own talent and effort, Quang Truong, Tien Dat, and Dieu Linh were mentored by senior artists of the theater, namely Meritorious Artist Hong Nam, Meritorious Artist Hoai Anh, and Artist Tuan Kha.

These three artists, who have performed hundreds of shows in these iconic roles, enthusiastically passed on the essence of traditional art and their professional experience. As a result, the three young actors absorbed much of this essence, allowing them to embody the characters of Luu Binh, Duong Le, and Chau Long with great emotion.

Besides the three artists playing the main roles, the other artists participating in the play are also talented faces from the Hanoi Cheo Theatre such as Xuan Dung, Thuy Hang, Hong Tham, Ngoc Ha...

In particular, artist Khac Huy (playing the role of Tru Phong) with his charming and humorous performance brought laughter and moments of relaxation to the audience.

Furthermore, with this production, People's Artist Tran Quoc Chiem has put a great deal of effort into preserving the exemplary elements of traditional Cheo opera, meticulously detailing each movement and melody to highlight the distinctive values of Cheo.

In particular, People's Artist Quoc Chiem added several details, such as using a real mirror instead of the previous "conventional" performance, or reciting poetry before the curtain opens to summarize the meaning of the play, and other details that contributed to its novelty.

The performance also incorporates dance movements to make the scenes more graceful and to enhance the appeal of a traditional Vietnamese opera.

The success of the traditional cheo play "Luu Binh - Duong Le" this time shows that if those involved in cheo continue to maintain their passion and genuine concern, creating opportunities for young artists to express themselves, then cheo will still have an appeal to young audiences in modern life.
