Mrs. Nguyen Kim Loan always spends time taking care of her granddaughter's education.
For more than half a year now, the small house of Mrs. Nguyen Kim Loan, in Thanh Quoi commune, has always been filled with the laughter of her niece Luong Thao Tien, a 6th grade student. After the administrative boundary merger and the implementation of the 2-level local government model, Thao's parents were transferred to work in Can Tho City. The distance from Hau Giang province (old) to the office is more than 60km, making both of them almost exhausted because they had to leave home early in the morning and return when it was already dark.
Mrs. Loan confided: “Seeing my daughter and her husband working far away, having to hire someone to pick them up and drop them off, I discussed sending them here for me to take care of. I am old but still healthy, so I will try to take care of my grandchild so that my children will worry less and can work with peace of mind. In the morning, I take my grandchild to school, and at noon, I cook him a hot meal. In the evening, after he finishes his homework, I let him talk to his mother on Zalo.”
Following the routine of living with her grandparents helps Thao Tien to be more active and study better than before. Tien said: “I am very happy living with my grandparents. My grandfather taught me to ride a bike and play chess. My grandmother takes care of my meals and sleep, reminds me not to be addicted to watching my phone, and teaches me to organize my books.”
Tien's mother, Nguyen Thi Lan, shared: "After the administrative boundary merger, I took on more work, traveled more, and sometimes worked overtime, processing documents until late at night. Therefore, I felt very secure when sending my child to live with her grandparents. Every night, I called my mother's house to chat with my daughter. We talked about everything from school to friends, teachers... My daughter also showed me the delicious dishes that her grandmother prepared to nourish her. Hearing my daughter's happy laughter, I felt very warm and truly grateful and appreciated the immense love my parents had for their children and grandchildren."
In Vinh Thuan Dong commune, Mrs. Luong Hong Tham is used to taking her two grandchildren to school every day. Mrs. Tham said: “Their mother did not have a stable job before. At the beginning of this year, she went to Korea for seasonal work. The children's father also works far away. Therefore, I brought the children to live with me to conveniently take care of and teach them.”
Not only taking good care of daily life and education, Mrs. Tham is also a "friend" of her two grandchildren. Little Pham Thi Kim Ngan - Mrs. Tham's granddaughter, boasted: "Grandma teaches me math, reading. In addition, she also guides me to pull weeds, water plants... to be close to nature, love working. I love grandma very much."
Thanks to their grandmother, Ngan and her brother have maintained good and excellent academic results for many years. More importantly, they live in a healthy and safe environment. Every afternoon, little Ngan runs around the yard, playing and telling her stories about school. Those peaceful moments are the foundation for children to develop their souls in the most natural way.
Although busy life and modern technology gradually change the way of life, the role of grandparents in the family is still sustainable, like a bond of love between generations. With the reorganization of administrative units, job opportunities... many young workers find it difficult to approach and take care of their children. In such circumstances, grandparents are always the support, taking care of every meal, sleep, training study habits, creating a safe and healthy environment for children. It is from that warm embrace that parents can feel secure in their homes - continuing to work, contribute, and build a better life for the future of their own family.
