The modern dance class at the Ninh Kieu Children's Cultural Center (now the Children's Cultural Department of the Can Tho City Cultural and Arts Center) is led by teacher Phuong Hong Lac. The class welcomes young students aged 5 and up who have a passion for this art form. Classes are currently held in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings, with various time slots to help children easily choose a suitable time to learn.
When they first start, students are guided by the instructor through simple hand and foot movements to get used to the rhythm of the music . After they have a good grasp of the rhythm, they will move on to learning basic dance routines, group exercises, and gradually approach more advanced techniques.
The students learn many dance routines with diverse musical genres. Instructor Phuong Hong Lac also incorporates body liberation exercises through vertical and horizontal stretching exercises and back bending. Besides learning famous dance routines, he also creates new routines based on popular songs or adjusts the content to suit the students' preferences.
Memorizing dance sequences also contributes to improving learning ability, reflexes, and thinking skills. Dance classes also help children become more confident when performing in front of crowds. 12-year-old Huynh Tu Trang excitedly shared: "I've been learning to dance here for almost a year now. The class is so much fun, and the teacher teaches many great dance routines. I can participate in school cultural programs as well as events organized by the Children's Cultural Center."
Modern dance offers many practical benefits for children's holistic development. The continuous movement also helps them improve their physical fitness, agility, and flexibility.
