Ba Na Commune was established by merging the area and population of Hoa Ninh and Hoa Nhon communes, formerly part of Hoa Vang District. Located in the midland region, bordering the Ba Na - Nui Chua mountain range, it enjoys a cool climate, favorable for the development of perennial fruit trees, among which green-skinned pomelo, widely grown in the former Hoa Ninh commune, is considered a prominent crop with great potential.
The Hoa Ninh pomelo growing region has developed strongly in recent years, linked to the local crop restructuring process. Thanks to suitable soil and favorable climate, the green-skinned pomelo trees grow steadily and bear fruit year-round.
Hoa Ninh pomelos weigh an average of 1.5 to 2 kg, have thin green skin, firm segments, a sweet and refreshing taste, and a distinctive aroma. Compared to rice cultivation or traditional crops, the economic value from pomelo trees is many times higher, making it suitable for the local production conditions and agricultural development orientation.
Currently, green-skinned pomelo is identified as a key crop, making a significant contribution to increasing the income of farmers in Ba Na. The area planted with pomelo is expanding, and many households are boldly investing in safe, organic farming practices to meet the increasingly high demands of the market.
Particularly during the Lunar New Year, the demand for pomelos increases sharply, not only serving people in the city but also supplying neighboring provinces, helping farmers feel secure in their production.
In the final days of the year, the atmosphere in the pomelo orchards of Hoa Ninh is one of bustling activity. Pomelo growers are intensifying pruning, bagging fruit, monitoring for pests and diseases, and ensuring uniform fruit quality.
This year's weather has been quite favorable, helping the trees grow well and resulting in a high fruit setting rate. Many pomelo orchards have already been pre-ordered by traders, creating a sense of excitement among the people for the Tet season.
Mr. Bui Thong, an experienced fruit grower in Ba Na commune, said he has been involved with pomelo cultivation for the past 7 years. On his approximately 3-hectare orchard, he grows a variety of fruit trees such as oranges, tangerines, guavas, and star apples, but pomelo remains his main crop, occupying 1 hectare with about 300 trees. On average, each mature pomelo tree yields nearly 40 fruits, providing a stable income for his family.
According to Mr. Thong, thanks to the application of proper care techniques, pomelo trees can bear fruit all year round, especially in time for the Lunar New Year. He prioritizes the use of organic fertilizers and well-rotted manure to help the trees stay healthy and increase their resistance.
This Lunar New Year, he expects to supply about 1 ton of pomelos to the market. Currently, many traders have come to place orders at prices ranging from 40,000 to 50,000 VND/kg. The pomelo trees alone bring his family a profit of about 150 million VND each year, contributing to improving their economic situation.

Similarly, Mr. Phan Van Huu (Ba Na commune) is tending a pomelo orchard with over 300 trees on an area of nearly 1 hectare. Previously, he planted acacia and pepper, but the yield was low. After receiving guidance and technical support from the commune's Farmers' Association, he boldly switched to planting pomelos and has been doing so for 6 years now.
Thanks to proper care, his pomelo orchard is thriving and producing consistent yields. For this year's Tet season alone, he expects to bring nearly 1,500 fruits to market, with stable prices and high praise from traders.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh, Vice President of the Farmers' Association of Ba Na commune, green-skinned pomelo is currently the main crop of the commune, identified by the Farmers' Association as a sustainable direction in the restructuring of crop production. The entire commune currently has about 40 households growing pomelos on an area of 45 hectares, of which 12 hectares are already yielding stable harvests, mainly concentrated in the former Hoa Ninh area.
Over the years, thanks to the promotion of scientific and technological advancements, support with seedlings and fertilizers, and training in safe and organic farming practices, many households have proactively managed to produce pomelos year-round, especially during the main harvests in May, August, and the Lunar New Year. The recognition of Ba Na pomelos as a 4-star OCOP product not only enhances the value of the fruit but also builds consumer confidence during the Tet holiday.
“This year, the pomelo orchards are basically ready for Tet (Lunar New Year), the quality of the fruit is guaranteed, the fruits are large, with beautiful green peels and sweet flesh, very suitable for gifts, display, and family use. The selling price is stable compared to previous years. We hope for favorable weather and good purchasing power so that farmers can sell their produce easily, earn income, and have a more fulfilling Tet celebration,” Ms. Binh shared.
