This year's winter-spring crop in Binh Giang's high-quality commercial rice growing area has yielded a bountiful harvest and fetched good prices, much to the delight of the farmers.

This year's winter-spring rice crop in Binh Giang is estimated to yield 69.5 quintals/hectare, 1.98 quintals/hectare higher than the provincial average yield.

Bountiful harvest

This season, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao in Chau Khe village (Thuc Khang commune) planted nearly 15 hectares of rice, mainly glutinous rice varieties 415 and Bac Thom No. 7. According to Ms. Thao, this year her family's rice yield reached nearly 3 quintals per sao (approximately 300 kg per 1000 square meters). With this yield, Ms. Thao's profit is also significantly higher than last year's winter-spring crop.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cu, Director of the Thuc Khang Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative, said: "The yield of the winter-spring rice crop this year for farmers in the commune is estimated to average 2.5 - 3 quintals/sao (1 sao = 360 square meters), and farmers usually sell fresh rice right in the fields."

This year's winter-spring crop in Binh Giang district covers 5,746 hectares of rice, including 5,100 hectares of high-quality rice, mainly varieties such as Bac Thom No. 7, Nep 415, and Hung Yen Nep. The advantages of these rice varieties include good growth and development, strong tillering, good lodging resistance, delicious rice quality, fragrant and sticky cooked rice, and sticky glutinous rice with a distinctive aroma.

Binh Giang has developed large-scale commercial rice farming areas, mainly focusing on high-quality rice varieties such as Bac Thom No. 7 and Nep 415...

Mr. Vu Van Luyen, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Binh Giang district, said: “Ten years ago, Binh Giang district established concentrated production zones, forming high-quality rice growing areas with two main rice varieties: Bac Thom No. 7 and glutinous rice 415, applying scientific and technical advancements and cultivation methods to production. This year's winter-spring rice yield in the district is the highest in many years, estimated at 69.5 quintals/hectare (1.98 quintals/hectare higher than the province's average rice yield) with a total production of about 40,000 tons.”

The district's winter-spring rice crop is estimated to yield approximately 430 billion VND, 50-60 billion VND higher than the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop. This year's winter-spring crop was bountiful due to favorable weather and low pest and disease rates. Binh Giang is one of the leading localities in Hai Duong province in implementing machine transplanting on a large scale. Machine transplanting reduces pest and disease infestations, thus decreasing the need for pesticide spraying by 1-2 times. The rice grows and develops well, is strong, and has high resistance to lodging. As a result, rice yields are higher, and the economic efficiency is greater compared to manual transplanting methods.

Stable consumer market

The rice market in Binh Giang is favorable due to the presence of many large-scale drying facilities and the strong development of rice milling in many communes and towns, which facilitates the purchase of paddy from farmers. The establishment of large-scale commercial rice production models with guaranteed product purchase agreements has helped increase the economic value per unit area of ​​cultivated land.

Farmers in Binh Giang often sell their rice fresh right in the fields without the hassle of drying and preserving it. According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Binh Giang district, this year, the price of fresh rice in Binh Giang is also higher than last year, with glutinous rice variety 415 priced at 8,700 - 9,800 VND/kg and Bac Thom No. 7 rice at 8,500 - 9,000 VND/kg. These prices have increased by 500 - 1,000 VND/kg compared to last year's winter-spring crop.

Currently, the drying ovens of Minh Huan Cooperative in Thai Duong commune are operating at full capacity.

Besides purchasing fresh paddy from farmers directly in the fields, many households have invested in building medium-sized paddy drying kilns with a capacity of 20-80 tons per kiln in Thai Hoa, Long Xuyen, Thai Duong, etc. Currently, Minh Huan Cooperative in Thai Duong commune has 8 drying kilns with a total capacity of over 500 tons per day. Minh Huan Cooperative purchases paddy from farmers in Hai Duong and some neighboring localities such as Thai Binh and Hung Yen. At this time, the drying kilns are operating at full capacity. Mr. Bui Van Huan, Director of Minh Huan Cooperative, said: "Currently, modern drying and milling technology is applied to production so that the input is fresh paddy and the output is rice."

Along with the system of drying ovens, rice and paddy trading stalls, and milling facilities and businesses in many communes and towns in the district, a large-scale rice distribution network has been formed. This network not only consumes paddy and rice within Binh Giang district but also buys paddy and rice from some neighboring localities. This is also one of the favorable conditions that ensures stable output for high-quality commercial rice in Binh Giang.

The zoning of high-quality, large-scale commercial rice production areas with a stable product distribution network has helped farmers in Binh Giang improve the economic efficiency of rice production and cultivation.
