Mr. Cao Xuan Thai is harvesting his first crop of grapes.
High economic efficiency
After working abroad in Taiwan for a period, Cao Xuan Thai learned how to grow grapes and decided to return to his hometown to start a business growing organic grapes using high technology, less dependent on weather conditions. To start his business, Thai contacted a high-tech grape-growing cooperative in the former Vinh Phuc province to learn more experience, buy seedlings and supplies, and establish a product distribution network. He also rented machinery to level and loosen the soil in the garden, remove weeds, disinfect, bought barbed wire to fence around the garden, built a trellis 1.5 meters wide and about 1.7 meters high made of iron with a nylon roof, and installed an automatic irrigation system...
In early 2024, when the weather warmed up, he bought 300 Black Ha grape vines and 50 Korean milk grape vines to plant on an area of 1,600 m² . The total investment for the model to date is about 400 million VND. After some time, Mr. Thai's vineyard has grown lush and green, adapted to the climate and soil conditions in the Kim Phu highlands, and produced beautiful, ripe bunches of grapes.
Mr. Thai shared: “This year, the grapes are just starting to bear fruit, and the roots are still weak, so I didn't let too many grapes grow. I only left about 10 bunches of Korean milk grapes on each vine, and 4-5 bunches of Ha Den grapes (each bunch weighing about 600g). When the grapes are almost ready for harvest, I wrap them in plastic to keep them beautiful and shiny, and to prevent bees and insects from damaging them and reducing yield.”
In the very first harvest, Mr. Thai collected over 800 kg of Black Hạ grapes, selling them at 100,000 VND/kg. He expects to harvest about 300 kg of Korean milk grapes from his 50 grapevines in another week, and all of it has already been pre-ordered by customers at 200,000 VND/kg. If all goes well, the total revenue from this harvest will be around 140 million VND. According to Mr. Thai, starting from the third year, each harvest of Korean milk grapes yields about 17 kg of fruit, while the Black Hạ grapes yield about 10 kg (each vine produces two harvests per year). Therefore, Mr. Thai expects to harvest approximately 1.5 tons of Korean milk grapes and 6 tons of Black Hạ grapes annually.
Besides growing grapes, Mr. Thai also invested in planting 80 Taiwanese guava trees and 70 Thai custard apple trees. These crops also utilize high technology, so they are developing very well and are expected to yield harvests in about 3 years.

A place for exciting experiences.
Recently, news of Cao Xuan Thai's vineyard being laden with ripe, sweet grapes has attracted many tourists from within and outside the district to visit and experience it. Most visitors are families and schools bringing their children for sightseeing and photography during the summer. Many tourists visit the vineyard, take photos, and share them on social media, leading to a growing number of visitors.
Ms. Cao Thi Thanh Le, residing in Dong Hoi ward, shared: “During the summer break, I brought my children back to visit our hometown. Knowing that Mr. Thai's vineyard was ripe and open to visitors free of charge, I took them to experience it. My children were very happy to pick grapes themselves, eat grapes, and learn about the grape-growing process of our local farmers. The grapes in Mr. Thai's vineyard are very sweet and grown organically, so they are very clean and can be picked and eaten right in the vineyard.”
Ms. Tran Thi Khanh Ly from Minh Hoa commune also brought her children to visit Mr. Thai's vineyard. Her son, Phan Duc Minh, shared: "This is the first time I've seen grapevines, picked and eaten these delicious, sweet, juicy grapes myself, so I really enjoyed it. When I get home, I'll recommend this place to my friends so they can experience it too."
"Kim Phu commune has the potential to develop eco-tourism and experiential tourism. Every year, the commune welcomes thousands of domestic and international tourists to visit its cave system, historical relics, and scenic spots... The construction of a vineyard and other fruit orchards using high technology by Mr. Cao Xuan Thai will create additional tourism products, contributing to attracting tourists and increasing income for his family and the people in the area," said Nguyen Bac Viet, Secretary of the Party Committee of Kim Phu commune. |
Mr. Cao Xuan Thai shared: “I was very surprised to see my vineyard attracting so many visitors. However, because it's the first harvest, there aren't many grapes yet, so visitors come and ask to buy in large quantities, but I don't have enough to sell. In the future, I will expand the grape growing area and create photo spots to attract visitors. In addition, I will also transfer scientific and technical knowledge to people in the commune to grow fruit trees using high-tech methods and connect with distributors to sell the products.”
Although newly implemented, Cao Xuan Thai's grape cultivation model has shown economic efficiency and potential for developing experiential tourism. Chairman of the Kim Phu Commune Farmers' Association, Dinh Thanh Hai, stated: “The conversion of mixed orchards to a high-tech grape cultivation model is a bold step by young farmer Cao Xuan Thai. In the future, the association will implement support policies to help Mr. Thai and other local farmers expand their grape cultivation area and connect them with markets for clean produce.”
