Kyle Walker stated that he did not intend to criticize Joao Felix. |
During AC Milan's 1-2 defeat to Napoli on March 31st, Walker had a heated exchange with teammate Felix on the pitch. At the start of the second half, he was caught loudly criticizing Felix. The England defender pulled Felix aside and said, "Pass the ball, we're not Messi." Walker's comment immediately went viral on social media.
However, on his podcast , Walker later explained: “I didn’t directly tell Joao Felix that he wasn’t Messi, that he should just pass the ball. My point was that the team needed a clear process. Joao agreed with me and said that the team needed to make more passes and control the ball better.”
“I didn’t say that directly to target Joao. I wanted to speak for the whole team. I didn’t know there were cameras there. But even if I had known, I wouldn’t have changed what I said,” Walker added. “What I meant was that nobody in the world is like Messi.”
He asserted: "That's true for every team in the world , except for a few individuals who can turn the game around as they wish. I honor them – Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, Mo Salah, and Ousmane Dembele, who has been playing brilliantly since the beginning of the year. Otherwise, football is a team game."
“If you have a player like Messi, he can dribble past four defenders and score, making the game easier. But when facing strong teams like Napoli, I think a team like AC Milan should pass the ball a lot to tire out the opponent. Then, spaces will appear. That’s what I discussed with Joao,” the England defender revealed.
