Microsoft is preparing for the release of Windows 11 23H2, the latest feature update for the Windows 11 operating system. However, there are unconfirmed rumors that the company is getting ready for a major update that could be labeled Windows 12.
Windows 12 is predicted to launch next year.
The latest evidence of this update doesn't come from an anonymous source within Microsoft, but from a public quote from an Intel executive. Seeking Alpha reposted a transcript of an event from the Citi Global Technology Conference 2023 (PC Gamer). The transcript includes an interview with Intel CFO David Zinsner, according to Neowin.
David Zinsner stated, "We really think 2024 will be a pretty good year for customers, especially thanks to the Windows refresh. And we think the operating system currently installed is quite old and needs a refresh. We think next year could be the starting point for that, thanks to the boost from the Windows operating system. So we are optimistic about things going into 2024." The phrase "Windows refresh" almost certainly refers to the next major version of Microsoft's operating system, rather than just a feature update for Windows 11.
Microsoft has yet to publicly announce its future Windows update plans. However, Windows Central, citing anonymous sources, claims that development of the next Windows operating system "has accelerated over the past few months." The update is now fully developed and will be completed by mid-2024, according to Windows Central. Therefore, the likely timeframe for the official launch of Windows 12 is in the fall of 2024.
