According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Ottawa, the International Football Federation (FIFA) will enhance the application of artificial intelligence (AI), sensors, and data systems at the 2026 World Cup to support referees, teams, and spectators. The tournament, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches, will comprehensively upgrade existing Goal-line and semi-automatic offside detection technologies.
In terms of infrastructure, each stadium is equipped with 16 cameras (an increase of 4 cameras compared to 2022) to monitor 29 data points on players' bodies at a frequency of 50 times per second. The Trionda match ball is also fitted with sensors that transmit data 500 times per second. All 1,248 players will be 3D scanned before the tournament to help determine offside and create television graphics.
Notably, the new system will send real-time audio alerts to referees in clear offside situations, allowing them to flag immediately instead of waiting for the play to finish, thereby shortening the processing time which previously took an average of 35 seconds.
For the teams, FIFA, in collaboration with Lenovo, is providing the "Football AI Pro" system, which analyzes tactics and simulates match situations equally for all teams. Additionally, the tournament will test a version of the referee's body-worn camera with anti-shake technology to provide a closer view for spectators. FIFA emphasizes that technology only plays a supporting role; the referee on the field retains the final say.
