The Netherlands national team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup, and coach Ronald Koeman resigned.
Following the Netherlands' defeat to Morocco in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup , coach Ronald Koeman announced his resignation.
"Last night, I made the decision to end my tenure as head coach of the Netherlands national team," coach Ronald Koeman wrote in an announcement posted on Instagram.

"We all harbored dreams of making history at this World Cup, but ultimately we couldn't achieve our goal. Nobody is more disappointed about that than I am."
"As the head coach, the ultimate responsibility rests with me."
Before the tournament, the Netherlands were considered one of the contenders to go far. However, they were defeated by Morocco 3-2 on penalties, after the two teams drew 1-1 in 120 minutes of play in Monterrey.
The Netherlands came very close to securing qualification, leading 1-0 in the final minutes thanks to a goal from Cody Gakpo. However, they squandered the victory when Issa Diop scored an equalizer in injury time, sending the game into extra time before Morocco won on penalties.
Thus, Ronald Koeman has become the fourth coach to lose his job at the 2026 World Cup. Previously, coach Sabri Lamouchi was sacked immediately after Tunisia's 1-5 defeat to Sweden. Next, coach Hong Myung-bo resigned after South Korea's elimination from the group stage. Finally, coach Steve Clarke also decided to terminate his contract when Scotland failed to advance in the 2026 World Cup.
