Build walls and pile up sandbags to block the water.

Regarding the article: "Why is Ninh Kieu Wharf in Can Tho still heavily flooded despite investing 30 billion VND in two pumping stations?" published on Dan Viet on October 23rd, according to observations by Dan Viet reporters today (November 4th), Ninh Kieu Wharf has had additional walls built and sandbags placed to prevent water from overflowing, aiming to mitigate severe flooding during high tides.

Accordingly, at Ninh Kieu Wharf, a 200m section from the marina area to the Ho Chi Minh monument will have an additional water barrier wall of approximately 0.5m, raising the total height to 0.8m. The 600m section from the passenger boat dock to guesthouse No. 2 will be reinforced with sandbags to a height of 0.6-0.7m depending on the location.

Previously, during the tidal surge exceeding alarm level 3 last October, the Ninh Kieu wharf area was severely flooded despite the investment in two pumping stations (comprising 7 pumps, with a total capital of 30 billion VND, managed by the Can Tho City Official Development Assistance Project Management Board (Can Tho City ODA Management Board) as the investor).

According to the Can Tho City ODA Management Board, the two pumping stations mentioned above are the last two projects in the project to renovate 32 roads in Ninh Kieu district.

The severe flooding was caused by high tides exceeding alarm level 3. At this time, water from the drainage system (which was invested in a long time ago and has not been renovated for many years, including many uncovered drains) overflowed onto the roads, and due to the high water level in the Hau River, it flowed over the sidewalks into the streets.

"At this time, even though both pumping stations are operating with all seven pumps, it's still not enough, leading to flooding at Ninh Kieu Wharf," informed Mr. Nguyen Van Tho, Deputy Director of the ODA Project Management Board of Can Tho City.

Mr. Tho clarified that, at the time the water level exceeded alarm level 3, the ODA Project Management Board could only try to assist in pumping water out into the river to limit flooding. In the long term, to overcome this situation, the Ninh Kieu District People's Committee must propose a comprehensive and synchronized solution.

Regarding this matter, it is known that the Ninh Kieu District People's Committee has also submitted a proposal to the Can Tho City People's Committee requesting approval to renovate the embankment area at Ninh Kieu Wharf to be consistent with the embankment system in the surrounding area.

As Dan Viet newspaper previously reported, starting from the morning of October 16th, the high tide in Can Tho began exceeding alarm level III and lasted until October 21st. During this time, on some days, from 6 am to 8 am and from 4 pm to 8 pm, many roads in Ninh Kieu wharf were flooded. At times, the water level on these roads rose to 50cm, or even higher.
