Ho Chi Minh City – A driver of a 40-seat sleeper bus transporting people to An Giang for Tet (Lunar New Year) was fined 12 million VND by traffic police for carrying one and a half times the permitted number of passengers.
On February 7th (the 28th day of the 12th lunar month), the An Suong Traffic Police Team, Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Police Department, issued a fine of 12 million VND to the driver of a 40-seat passenger bus carrying 64 people.
Yesterday morning, this vehicle was transporting people from Binh Duong to An Giang. While traveling on National Highway 1, in front of the Quang Trung Software Technology Park, traffic police stopped the vehicle for inspection and discovered it was carrying 24 people over capacity. Many people were crammed into a small space, with luggage placed along the aisle.

The driver stated that due to the high number of passengers, the bus company wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to earn more revenue, so they carried many passengers. The traffic police subsequently requested the transport company to arrange alternative vehicles to transport passengers back to their hometowns along the correct route.
According to Decree 100/2019, drivers (excluding buses) will be fined from 400,000 to 600,000 VND per person exceeding the limit, with a maximum total fine of 40,000,000 VND for the following violations: carrying 2 or more people over the limit on vehicles with up to 9 seats, carrying 3 or more people over the limit on vehicles with 10 to 15 seats, carrying 4 or more people over the limit on vehicles with 16 to 30 seats, and carrying 5 or more people over the limit on vehicles with more than 30 seats.
The Traffic Police Department advises people to choose reputable bus companies when booking tickets and boarding buses to return home for Tet (Lunar New Year); they should not accept buses that overcrowd passengers or fail to fulfill their contractual commitments, in order to ensure their own safety and the safety of their loved ones.
