New consumer trends
Recently, the electric vehicle market in Vietnam in general and Hue City in particular has seen significant development. While previously electric vehicles were mainly chosen by students, they have now become a familiar mode of transportation for many other segments of the population.
Given the frequent fluctuations in gasoline prices, Mr. Le Van Ha, residing in Phu Bai ward, decided to choose an electric motorbike for his daily transportation needs. According to Mr. Ha, this is a suitable option in the context of increasingly sophisticated electric vehicle technology, effectively meeting the transportation needs of the people.
Mr. Tran Viet, residing on Le Ngo Cat Street, Thuy Xuan Ward, said that he spends about 600,000 VND per month on gasoline for his motorbike. Meanwhile, with an electric motorbike, each charge only costs about 9,000 VND, significantly lower than a gasoline-powered vehicle. This is one of the reasons he is considering switching to an electric vehicle.
At electric vehicle dealerships, the number of customers browsing and learning about new models is increasing. Many young families in urban areas are choosing electric vehicles for commuting to work, taking their children to school, or traveling within the city. Meanwhile, in rural areas, electric vehicles are also becoming increasingly popular due to their low operating costs and convenience in daily life.
Recently, Mr. Nguyen Van Manh, residing in My Thuong ward, decided to invest in an electric car to serve his family's transportation needs and to use it for transportation business when necessary. "After careful research and calculations, I realized that electric cars have many advantages. Operating costs are lower than gasoline-powered cars, and maintenance is simpler. Importantly, this vehicle is environmentally friendly and aligns with the current trend of green development," Mr. Manh said.
Reduce costs, move towards a greener lifestyle.
One of the key reasons electric vehicles are increasingly being chosen by people is their cost-saving potential. According to many households, the cost of charging is significantly lower than the fuel cost of vehicles using internal combustion engines.
Electric vehicles also significantly reduce routine maintenance costs. Due to their simpler engine design compared to internal combustion engines, many items such as oil changes, air filter replacements, and fuel system-related components are eliminated. This helps users save a considerable amount of money during use.
Beyond economic benefits, electric vehicles are also highly valued for their smooth operation, low noise levels, and zero emissions into the environment. In the context of climate change and environmental pollution, which are major societal concerns, choosing electric transportation is seen as a practical action contributing to reducing emissions and protecting the environment.
Despite its many advantages, many people believe that because electric vehicles operate quite quietly, other road users sometimes find them difficult to spot from a distance, especially in densely populated areas or complex intersections, thus easily leading to traffic accidents. This requires drivers to improve their awareness of traffic safety regulations; at the same time, manufacturers need to research more appropriate warning solutions.
Furthermore, while investment has been made in the charging station system for electric motorcycles and electric cars, it is still not fully synchronized. In some areas, the density of charging stations is still low, failing to meet the needs of users, especially for long journeys. This is considered one of the barriers that makes some people hesitant to switch to using electric cars.
Mr. Tuong Thanh Hien, a driving instructor at Hue College, believes that as charging station infrastructure continues to expand and policies supporting the use of clean energy are implemented more strongly, the number of people using electric vehicles will certainly increase.
“From now until 2030, Hue City strives to complete the infrastructure of charging stations for electric motorbikes and electric cars throughout the entire area. Accordingly, each commune and ward will be equipped with suitable charging stations, ensuring that the charging needs of electric motorbikes and electric cars of people, businesses, and organizations participating in traffic are met, contributing to promoting the transition to green transportation,” Mr. Vo Le Nhat, Director of the Department of Construction, informed.
