In contrast to Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United currently possess squads worth significantly less than the amount they spent on acquiring their star players.

Accordingly, Chelsea spent £880 million on their current players, but Transfermarkt values this squad at only around £756 million, resulting in a loss of £124 million. This is the biggest loss among the 20 teams in the English Premier League (EPL). This explains why, in recent weeks, club owner Todd Boehly has sold off many surplus players after spending heavily on a series of star signings in the last two transfer windows, including Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Wesley Fofana. Many players inherited by the American owner have seen their value plummet; for example, striker Romelu Lukaku, who was bought for a club record £97.5 million in 2021, is now valued at only £34 million by Transfermarkt.
Similarly, Manchester United are also offloading many players to fund manager Erik ten Hag's continued squad rebuilding. The Red Devils have spent nearly £830 million on their squad, but their current value is only £715 million according to Transfermarkt, a difference of £115 million. Defender Harry Maguire and midfielder Jadon Sancho are among the players whose value has plummeted in recent seasons, now worth less than £40 million each, after the club initially spent £80 million and £73 million respectively to acquire them.
Wolves and Sheffield United also have squad values lower than the amount invested. However, their respective losses of £20.5 million and £1 million are still much more "modest" than those of Chelsea and Man United.
While Chelsea and Man United are at the bottom of Transfermarkt's valuations, Arsenal are at the top. Arsenal's current squad is valued at £915 million, despite the club having spent around £572 million on acquiring star players. This statistic reflects shrewdness in the transfer market but also shows the progress of homegrown players, such as Bukayo Saka, who cost Arsenal nothing but is now worth £102 million. Additionally, Martin Odegaard and William Saliba are among the players whose value increased after helping the Gunners finish second in the Premier League last season.
Manchester City's squad, which cost only £852 million to build, is now valued at over £1 billion, thanks to winning three titles last season: the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. But in terms of uniqueness, Liverpool's case is the most interesting. Despite a disappointing performance and missing out on Champions League qualification, Liverpool's squad still increased in value by £154 million, more than Man City.
