Currently, Pu Hong commune has more than 20ha of coffee, concentrated in 2 villages: Cha B, C. Of which, nearly 2ha has been harvested, creating stable income for households.
Ms. Vi Thi Doan, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Pu Hong commune, said: "The transformation of upland crops from upland rice and maize to coffee is entirely driven by the people's initiative. After many years of cultivating traditional crops, some households realized that the land was degraded, productivity and output were low, so they learned from coffee growing households in Muong Ang and Song Ma districts (Son La province). ) on planting techniques, taking care of coffee trees and then buying seeds to plant. Currently, 100% of the coffee tree area is well developed, of which nearly 2 hectares have been harvested. Currently, there are more households in the area converting their upland crops to growing macadamia and cinnamon trees. Up to now, the whole commune has 7ha of macadamia and more than 10ha of cinnamon trees.
Ms. Vi Thi Thoi, from Cha B village, said: Since 2018, realizing that upland rice cultivation is not economically viable, I have gone to the communes of Song Ma district and Muong Ang district to learn how to grow coffee trees and buy seeds. about planting. Up to now, the entire area of nearly 2 hectares of coffee has been harvested. Coffee products sold to processing facilities in Muong Ang district. In 2022, my family has an income of over 70 million VND from coffee trees.
Similarly, in Huoi Leng commune (Muong Cha district), people have been actively transforming the structure of crops and livestock to increase income. In 2020, there are 11 households in 4 villages: Huoi Toong 1, 2; Trung Dinh and Ma Lu Thang converted fallow and inefficient upland land to growing cinnamon. After 2 years of cinnamon trees taking root in Huoi Leng, by 2022, Huoi Leng commune will be planned by the People's Committee of Muong Cha district to develop a concentrated cinnamon growing area of the district. The People's Committee of Muong Cha district organized a delegation to visit and survey the cinnamon growing model in Yen Bai province. Then, with funds for forest protection and development, sustainable forestry development, Muong Cha district organized to support people to switch to planting cinnamon on the fields. In 2022, the whole district has planted 82,01ha; in which, Huoi Leng commune alone planted 23,23ha, bringing the total cinnamon growing area of the commune to 34,23ha, concentrated in the villages: Huoi Toong 1, 2 and Trung Dinh.
Mr. Giang A Sang, a resident of Huoi Tong village, Huoi Leng commune, said: Growing upland rice and maize often lost crops, and the economic efficiency was low. Therefore, I have been thinking about switching to other plants since 2017. In 2018, I visited my relatives in Yen Bai - the locality that grows a large cinnamon tree in the Northwest region. I learned about planting and care techniques, then about surveying soil and climate conditions in Huoi Leng. All specifications are suitable, in 2020 I bought seedlings in Yen Bai to plant 2ha of cinnamon on abandoned and inefficient upland areas. Up to now, the cinnamon tree has grown and developed well, the tree is taller than a person's head.
