
Returning to the Hoa Loc sand mango growing area in An Huu commune, Dong Thap province in early May, along provincial road 864 are orchards of Hoa Loc sand mangoes in full bloom. Many households living along this road display ripe mangoes for sale in front of their houses.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Thao's family (Hoa Hamlet, An Huu Commune) cultivates 2 hectares of Hoa Loc mangoes. According to Mr. Thao, this is currently the peak season for Hoa Loc mangoes. Grade 1 Hoa Loc mangoes are priced at around 60,000 VND/kg, and Grade 2 at around 50,000 VND/kg. At the current price of 60,000 VND/kg, farmers can make a living.
Also in Hoa hamlet, An Huu commune, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan's family cultivates 1.3 hectares of Hoa Loc mangoes. According to Ms. Lan, her family currently sells Hoa Loc mangoes in bulk at the orchard for 40,000 VND/kg (for unripe mangoes) and 30,000 VND/kg for ripe mangoes.
Ms. Lan shared: “These mangoes only have one season a year. Up to this point, my family has earned over 200 million VND from selling mangoes; after deducting expenses, we have a profit of about 150 million VND. It's now the end of the mango season. Because it's the peak season, the price of mangoes is not as high as during the off-season.”
Hoa Loc sand mangoes are a famous specialty fruit of the Mekong Delta region. This specialty fruit is not only famous domestically but is also exported to international markets. Hoa Loc sand mangoes have been granted geographical indication protection by the Intellectual Property Office - Ministry of Science and Technology .
According to statistics, An Huu commune currently has about 200 hectares dedicated to cultivating Hoa Loc mangoes. To further promote the Hoa Loc mango brand, the Hoa Loc Cooperative (An Huu commune) and its members are gradually developing this specialty fruit into a 4-star OCOP product by 2020. Businesses in the area have also researched processing Hoa Loc mangoes into products that meet OCOP standards.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, the total mango growing area in the province is currently about 16,700 hectares, with a production of over 229,000 tons per year.
To sustainably develop the fruit industry, including mangoes, the agricultural sector's orientation in the coming period is to reorganize the fruit industry along the value chain. The focus is on reorganizing production towards the formation of organized raw material zones.
At that time, farmers did not produce individually but participated in cooperatives and production groups, closely linking with businesses from production to consumption. This was the foundation for synchronized quality control, brand building, and meeting market demands…
