As of October 15th, pangasius export turnover reached US$1.5 billion, an increase of 8.9% compared to the same period in 2023. However, the growth rate is uneven due to fierce competition from other countries and whitefish product lines.

According to the Fisheries Department, high-value-added pangasius products still account for a small proportion, mainly frozen products. Dependence on a few major export markets such as the US, China, and ASEAN... means pangasius exports may face disadvantages if these markets change policies or impose stricter requirements on quality and food safety. Furthermore, a lack of coordination and excessive competition among Vietnamese processors and exporters, along with inconsistent quality, has affected the reputation and brand of the product. The orientation for the pangasius industry until 2025 will shift the agricultural economic structure towards increasing the production value of advantageous sectors with low resource intensity. At the same time, it will invest in and upgrade essential infrastructure to meet production requirements for over 30 concentrated aquaculture and seed production areas; Build The production, processing, and consumption chain ensures a stable output for over 30% of aquaculture products.

According to Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Thien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Thap province, this year, the value of pangasius production in the province is estimated at over 8,800 billion VND, an increase of 2.8% compared to 2023, accounting for over 17% of the total value of the province's agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sector. The area for commercial pangasius farming reached 2,630 hectares (an increase of 10 hectares compared to 2023), with an estimated production of 540,000 tons (an increase of 15,000 tons compared to 2023).

At the conference, delegates also pointed out future challenges such as: competition from other aquatic species; the export price of Vietnamese pangasius compared to other countries; the impact of climate change; regulations on emission reduction in pangasius farming, processing, and export; and technical and trade barriers imposed by importing countries on pangasius products.

In addition, experts and delegates proposed several solutions to develop the pangasius industry, such as: the need for close cooperation between businesses and farmers to ensure market supply and demand; and the management of production conditions for aquaculture hatcheries and feed production facilities. Aquaculture, environmental treatment products; establishing sustainable pangasius farming areas; applying advanced scientific and technological solutions in the management and production of pangasius fingerlings and commercial fish.

Mr. Tien It is important to strictly manage pangasius fish breeding facilities to ensure the quality of the broodstock; pangasius production and processing must aim for green production and reduced emissions; and the effectiveness of scientific research in pangasius farming and production must be improved.

According to Mr. Tien, localities and businesses also need to... Establishing a closed-loop chain in production - processing - consumption; strengthening the application of science and technology, and utilizing by-products to increase product value. In addition to traditional markets, it is necessary to seek and develop new potential markets, including the Muslim market that meets Halal certification requirements.
