Remember, when launching the airstrike campaign against Iran on February 28th, President Donald Trump confidently stated that the conflict would only last about six weeks, and painted a picture of the Iranian people quickly rising up to overthrow the Tehran regime.
But the US involvement in Iran has not stopped at a limited military campaign, but has transformed into a full-blown regional confrontation that risks being protracted, with negative consequences on a global scale.
Facing the superior military power of the United States, Iran employs a strategy of "asymmetrical warfare" based on the principle of "disperse to survive, wear down to weaken, and prolong to erode the political will of the opponent."
As a result, despite suffering significant military and economic losses, the Iranian leadership has maintained its power structure, continued to control instruments of influence in the region, and has shown no signs of significant concessions on the nuclear issue.
Meanwhile, the challenges facing Donald Trump are becoming increasingly apparent. The protracted conflict has caused oil prices to skyrocket, the US stock market to plummet, and has eroded the Republican Party's advantage at a crucial time as the midterm elections approach. Nevertheless, Washington can still argue that the military campaign has significantly strained Iran's defense capabilities and somewhat diminished the threats facing the US and its allies in the region.
The stalemate has forced Washington and Tehran to sit down at the negotiating table. No concrete results have been achieved yet, as the two sides cannot reconcile their demands. Donald Trump is in a dilemma, facing two difficult choices: either accept an imperfect agreement to withdraw from the crisis, or continue the military campaign and risk getting bogged down even deeper.
Tactical victories on the battlefield do not equate to long-term strategic success. After 100 days of conflict, what is noteworthy is not which side is gaining the absolute advantage, but that neither Washington nor Tehran has achieved their strategic objectives as expected.
