Implementing the National Program on Energy Saving and Efficiency for the period 2020-2030, Phu Tho province aims to achieve energy savings of 3-5% of the province's total energy consumption by 2025 compared to current forecasts (2020-2025). Recognizing electricity saving as an effective solution to reduce budget expenditures and create momentum for socio-economic development, the entire political system has actively participated with practical actions from agencies, units, and all levels of the population.

"The nation needs electricity like the body needs blood." This statement by President Ho Chi Minh during his visit to the Yen Phu Power Plant in 1954 remains relevant today, especially as Phu Tho province, like the rest of the country, is accelerating industrialization and modernization towards sustainability. Every small action by individuals, households, and production facilities contributes to reducing electricity consumption, minimizing environmental pollution, and saving a significant amount of national costs. And saving electricity has become a beautiful aspect of the civilized lifestyle of the people of Phu Tho. The "Electricity Saving Family" model, aiming for "Every household saves electricity, every person saves electricity," has been maintained and organized by Phu Tho Power Company for many years.

According to statistics from the electricity sector, household electricity consumption accounts for approximately 35-40% of the total national electricity consumption. Therefore, the economical, safe, and efficient use of electricity by each individual and family plays a crucial role, not only contributing to reducing electricity consumption and saving costs for families, but also protecting the environment and conserving national resources.

Mr. Nguyen Van Bay, residing in No Luc village, Thuy Van commune, Viet Tri city, stated: “For many years, my family has consistently chosen to purchase and use energy-saving appliances such as LED lighting and inverter electronic devices. In addition, I have researched and applied methods for using electrical appliances efficiently and economically… As a result, my family's electricity bill has always remained reasonable and stable, even during the hot summer months.”

Nowadays, saving electricity has become a habit for households, through specific actions such as: turning off electrical appliances when not in use; only using air conditioners when absolutely necessary; choosing to buy high-efficiency electrical appliances or those with energy-saving labels; installing and using rooftop solar power systems, solar water heating systems, etc. Along with that, meaningful events like Earth Hour have also become a habit, enthusiastically participated in by the people.

Ms. Nguyen Lan Anh from Thanh Mieu ward, Viet Tri city, shared: “During the recent Earth Hour event, my family participated by turning off the lights for 60 minutes. However, I think it's important that saving electricity becomes a daily habit for all family members. If each family, each office, and each business contributes a little, then we can all work together to protect the environment and preserve valuable resources for national development.”

Changing habits also begins with each family proactively securing their own energy sources to meet their daily needs, which will contribute to energy conservation. This is the thinking of Mr. Nguyen Van Quyet, a lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Hung Vuong University, when researching the topic "Solar power systems for households".

Mr. Quyet said: “Originating from my family's needs during the summer when there are power outages, using a gasoline-powered generator is noisy, polluting, and expensive. That's why I researched and studied the working mechanism of solar power. With its advantages of being environmentally friendly, having low initial investment costs, and being suitable for the weather characteristics of Northern Vietnam with a high number of sunshine hours per year.” From research to implementation, he has installed solar power systems for 10 families with investment costs ranging from 50-60 million VND, and has initially received positive feedback.

In addition to saving electricity, activities supporting families in building and installing biogas equipment and solar water heaters, and developing energy-saving household models, have significantly reduced the use of traditional energy sources such as coal and biomass energy. This has resulted in substantial savings of energy resources, reduced deforestation, environmental protection, and improved living standards for people, especially those in rural areas, due to savings on electricity and fuel costs.

According to data from Phu Tho Power Company, in 2023, the total electricity savings in the province reached 83.78 million kWh, equivalent to a saving rate of 2.21%, of which electricity savings for business and service purposes amounted to 2.7 million kWh, reaching 2.85%; electricity savings for industrial production purposes amounted to 48.97 million kWh, reaching 2.05%...

In response to the Earth Hour 2024 program, after one hour of switching off lights, the entire province saved 7,100 kWh. To achieve these results, in recent times, the work of disseminating information and educating people about energy saving has been carried out extensively, synchronously, and regularly.

Every year, agencies and units develop plans, regulations, and measures to implement energy and electricity saving; inspect and monitor the application of regulations on energy consumption levels; and carry out the procurement of equipment that requires energy labeling as prescribed...

The work of disseminating information, educating, and raising awareness among the people, especially students, about electricity usage has been integrated into regular lessons and extracurricular activities in 100% of schools at all levels in the province. Schools also regularly promote energy conservation through loudspeakers, leaflets, school competitions, and social media.

Manufacturing businesses should proactively plan their production schedules; regularly inspect and replace old, outdated, and inefficient equipment with new, energy-saving equipment; conduct periodic maintenance and servicing of machinery; install additional metering and voltage stabilizers to control electricity usage; and prioritize energy-saving equipment and the application of renewable energy, solar energy, and wind energy.

Furthermore, one of the solutions that Phu Tho Power Company is focusing on to reduce grid overload is signing load adjustment agreements with large customers. In 2024, Phu Tho Power Company worked with large customers (with electricity consumption of 1 million kWh/year or more) on participating in load adjustment, helping businesses plan their production rationally, shifting load away from peak hours, especially during the hot months to reduce peak power. At the same time, restructuring production accordingly reduces electricity costs during peak hours, helps stabilize the grid, and reduces the risk of overload leading to incidents.

To date, Phu Tho Power Company has signed 230 out of 230 agreements on electricity load adjustment with large customers, with potential load reduction of 9.2MW for type 1 customers (with 2-hour advance notice) and 73MW for type 2 customers (with 24-hour advance notice).

Tasa Ceramic Tile Joint Stock Company is one of the businesses that has actively cooperated with Phu Tho Power Company in participating in the load adjustment program. Mr. Pham Huu Vu - representative of Tasa Ceramic Tile Joint Stock Company - affirmed: “Implementing load adjustment will help businesses save electricity, while contributing to preventing the power system from being overloaded, ensuring safe and stable operation. Especially during the peak of the hot season when the load throughout the province often increases dramatically, our company is committed to always standing side by side and cooperating with Phu Tho Power Company in reducing the load when required.”

Mr. Pham Van Chuc, Deputy Director of Phu Tho Power Company, stated: “To better meet the increasing electricity demand of customers, the Northern Power Corporation and Phu Tho Power Company have implemented technical solutions and accelerated the progress of investment projects for the construction and renovation of the power grid. In addition, Phu Tho Power Company has worked with major customers to develop reasonable production plans and adjust demand response (DR) away from peak hours; continuing to implement DR. Simultaneously, we have signed electricity saving commitment agreements with over 38,000 non-residential customers, achieving a rate of 91% of the total non-residential electricity users, with a committed electricity saving amount of 47 million kWh/year. The company also regularly coordinates with relevant sectors, units, and media agencies to strengthen propaganda and raise awareness about implementing solutions for efficient and economical electricity use.”
