According to teacher Dang Mai Thanh Tuan (Dong Thanh Primary School, Can Giuoc district), works on historical themes help students cultivate a patriotic spirit.
To complete the 1.2 x 3.6m chalk painting, the young teacher took about 5 hours. Having experimented with various painting materials, he concluded that painting with chalk is faster than with other materials. However, painting with chalk also presents a challenge because the chalk breaks easily, controlling the strokes is difficult compared to using a brush, and the smooth surface of the board makes it difficult to draw small details. Furthermore, chalk colors are not diverse, limiting the choice of color palettes. Accidental touching of the painting can cause smudging, so the artist needs to be very careful and meticulous.
Teacher Tuan shared: “For about the past two years, I’ve tried my hand at painting large-scale pictures with chalk on holidays and special occasions because it’s a familiar medium for both myself and my students. Chalk painting allows me to indulge my passion for art while also being useful in my lessons. During the historic final days of April, I chose to recreate the image of the liberation army marching into the Independence Palace , hoping to help my students better understand the significance of April 30th and to nurture their patriotism from a young age.”
Passionate about painting and loving children, Tuan always cherished the dream of pursuing a career in Fine Arts Education because, for him, it's a special subject that not only helps children develop their observation and creativity but also contributes to nurturing their souls. In 2013, he graduated from Long An College of Education (now Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, Long An Branch ) with a major in Fine Arts Education and has been a teacher for 13 years now.
Over the past time, driven by his passion and knowledge, Mr. Tuan has continuously innovated his teaching methods. “In each lesson, I often use videos and illustrative images to help students visualize and become more interested in the lesson. I also incorporate familiar themes about hometowns, families, and schools into the drawing lessons, and organize group drawing games, relay drawing, and product design competitions to create a fun and lively atmosphere for the students in each lesson,” Mr. Tuan added.
It is known that, in addition to teaching Art, Mr. Dang Mai Thanh Tuan also takes on the role of nurturing artistic talent for students both inside and outside the school to participate in competitions. To date, many students he has mentored have achieved high results in painting competitions at the school, local, and national levels.
