Social media photos show crowds of people anxiously waiting around school gates for their children's exams. Their presence doesn't involve doing the math for them or writing the essays for them in the exam room, but they still believe their presence serves as a form of emotional support to help their children feel calmer.

I know a colleague who took time off work during her child's exams. Her child had already secured a direct entry into their desired university program, and the graduation exam was just a prerequisite with minimum scores, but she still managed to arrange her work schedule to take her child to the exam venue every day.

Last night, my uncle from the countryside called, excitedly announcing that his child had done well on the exam and would likely graduate in the top group. He and his son have decided to attend a vocational school, but even so, they still want to graduate with a respectable ranking. I'm happy for them and also for the future of these children who just went through this memorable exam, marking the first time the new general education program has been implemented. Whether they end up wielding wrenches or hammers, they must strive to get a "beautiful" graduation certificate so that no one can look down on them.

Seeing the parents huddled together with pensive faces, I was reminded of the feelings I had when my child entered the exam hall. Genuine emotions, with the most meticulous calculations. Things that many fathers with children taking exams often think about. The familiar route to school, yet still meticulously surveying it, calculating the distance, the timing of each traffic light, and the traffic density during peak travel times to ensure the fastest and safest journey. What to eat, what color to wear, what words to avoid saying... all of these are important considerations during the exam days. Before my child's exam, I lit incense and prayed to my ancestors for their blessings. I know this might only be a spiritual aspiration, not a substitute for my child's actual learning, but it's a legitimate human desire.

Children cannot remain in their parents' arms forever, and this exam marks a turning point in their lives. Whether it's for university admission or simply for high school graduation, no one wants their child to encounter any misfortune. Therefore, the concern, the eagerness, and even seemingly unnecessary actions are not meant to add pressure, but rather to motivate the child. This is a sincere and touching expression of care and love for learning. We agree and rejoice in this, as education is increasingly valued and recognized and cared for appropriately by society.
