At noon on July 22nd (Hanoi time), the world's largest video sharing platform officially updated its interface and features. The Trending chart is no longer on the homepage and in the status bar. Previously, YouTube had announced this change, replacing it with the Charts feature.
Users in Vietnam can still follow the Trending charts via the previously provided links. However, YouTube no longer labels previously trending videos. Previously, clips in the chart were often marked "#1 in the Trending category," or "#1 in the music , gaming, etc." category.
Currently, the latest episode of the show "Em Xinh Say Hi" is leading in viewership in Vietnam.
According to YouTube, this decision reflects a shift in how users discover content. The platform will focus more on personalization tools and specialized rankings. When the Trending page launched in 2015, it was much easier to capture trending videos with a single list.

However, trending videos have expanded into more and more subcategories and genres, making the Trending tab less useful for users. While it still displays top videos well, YouTube users often only watch videos for specific purposes, such as gaming videos, following particular streamers, or personal hobbies.
In addition, YouTube has acknowledged that traffic to its Trending page has decreased significantly, especially over the past five years. Users now discover viral videos from a variety of sources, from short videos on Shorts and search suggestions to other platforms like TikTok.
"In addition to highlighting popular content in the rankings, we will continue to show viewers videos they might love through personalized recommendations. This way, we can display more popular and relevant content, making it feel natural, just like how viewers typically search for new videos," the company explained.
Instead, YouTube is directing users and creators to other tools. The Trending section will be replaced with “YouTube Charts.” This is a small YouTube page created to display some of the most popular content on the site in real time.
Currently, Charts does not support Vietnam. Users can search by location to track music channels with high view counts and chart-topping songs. Many of the platform's tools are still limited and incomplete.
In Vietnam, YouTube's Trending list remains one of the most prestigious rankings, reflecting the level of interest and achievement of artists. Competing for this position used to be a race between artists and television programs. The era when Sơn Tùng M-TP, Jack Jack, and game shows like "Masked Singer," "Rap Việt," "Anh Trai Say Hi," and "Anh Trai Vượt Ngàn Chông Gai" dominated this ranking reflected the tastes of the domestic audience.
The practice of "boosting views" and "racing" to the top of YouTube trending charts for favorite artists is also part of the idol culture in Vietnam. When the platform removes this category, the way achievements for content are recognized will be significantly affected.
