12.8% of the adult population has chronic kidney disease.

According to the Department of Disease Prevention (Ministry of Health), surveys conducted by the Vietnam Urology and Nephrology Association and several domestic studies indicate that approximately 12.8% of the adult population in Vietnam suffers from chronic kidney disease. However, early detection remains limited: about 90% of those affected are unaware of their condition; approximately 8,000 cases are screened annually.

Many patients are diagnosed late, in stages 3-5, with cardiovascular complications, anemia, electrolyte imbalances, etc., increasing the need for renal replacement therapy. In the end-stage, the burden of treatment is enormous. In 2023, approximately 46,000 chronic kidney disease patients required dialysis under limited treatment facilities (around 7,000 dialysis machines).

Chronic kidney disease is caused by damage to the renal vessels, glomeruli, tubules, interstitial tissue, and urinary tract. Common risk factors include: diabetes mellitus, hypertension, advanced age, cardiovascular disease, a history of acute kidney injury, obesity, prolonged use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and nephrotoxic drugs. In cancer patients, acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease can be multifactorial (infiltration, tumor lysis syndrome, infection, toxicity from chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and certain targeted therapies), requiring multidisciplinary collaboration.

The Vietnam Young Doctors Association, in collaboration with sponsors, has implemented the CAREME - Love Yourself program, aiming for early detection and management of cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic diseases. Launched in 2022 in various localities, the program has conducted basic rapid tests, ultrasounds, and electrocardiograms on-site to assess the early risk of certain chronic diseases. The examination results are integrated into the electronic medical record system in many localities.

Dr. Ha Anh Duc, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management and President of the Vietnam Young Doctors Association, said: "The program is not just a health check-up campaign, but also helps people take care of themselves through concrete actions: regular health check-ups, adherence to treatment, and early prevention. The Association will continue to work alongside the Ministry of Health and localities to spread the spirit of preventive medicine and smart healthcare to every citizen."
