"Currently, the biggest limitation is the shortage of medical personnel, especially high-quality personnel, in the context of the province reviewing its healthcare network, and the provincial hospital will expand its capacity to 1,000 beds," said Mr. Ha Trung Chien, Permanent Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Son La province, at the conference on strengthening medical personnel in Son La province and signing a comprehensive healthcare cooperation agreement for the period 2026-2030, organized by the People's Committee of Son La province on April 18th in Son La.

According to Mr. Chien, in 2025, approximately 3% of patients in the province will be transferred to central hospitals, mainly for cancer requiring radiotherapy, complex spinal cord injuries, and some cardiovascular diseases.

Therefore, human resources, especially high-quality human resources, and increased investment in healthcare infrastructure are key priorities for local healthcare.

At the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, stated that the hospital will support Son La Provincial General Hospital in improving the quality of primary healthcare, training personnel, and building a primary healthcare network. "If primary healthcare is not good, no matter how much specialized healthcare is built, it will still be insufficient," Dr. Co assessed.

Mr. Co shared that Son La is actually short of thousands of medical personnel. Therefore, in addition to training medical personnel for Son La, in the long term, it is necessary to aim for the establishment of a medical training facility right in the province to proactively secure human resources for Son La and the Northwest region. Currently, Bach Mai Hospital is in the process of establishing Bach Mai University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and its team of leading experts can fully support Son La in improving the quality of its medical workforce.

Regarding Son La Provincial General Hospital, Mr. Co assessed that the hospital is implementing electronic medical records at a basic level, becoming a paperless hospital; and in the future, it must apply smart data in diagnosis, treatment, and healthcare for the people.

People in mountainous areas need access to high-tech medical services.

Mr. Co affirmed that the cooperation between Bach Mai Hospital and Son La Provincial General Hospital is not just about technology transfer, but is comprehensive, ensuring that people receive healthcare right in their villages and benefit from high-tech medical services.

For example, the hospital currently has a very good DSA machine, a modern interventional system, but it needs to be used effectively so that people can benefit from scientific and technological achievements: early thrombectomy for stroke, stent placement for coronary artery disease; tumor intervention, embolization (thoracic, liver, prostate...). Therefore, Bach Mai Hospital needs assistance to immediately apply this machine.

Bach Mai Hospital is also ready to support Son La in applying technology in healthcare system management; the Provincial Department of Health is synchronizing people's health data from villages and hamlets... All data will be collected at a single point, with synchronized technology throughout the province and with the central government, avoiding fragmented healthcare systems.

According to Mr. Co, improving the quality of human resources and maximizing the use of equipment will help reduce patient referrals, increase treatment chances, save lives, and lower costs. Investing in health is investing in national health security.
